The Poison Garden
The Poison Garden | A. J. Banner
12 posts | 10 read | 11 to read
A woman's idyllic life becomes a deceptive hall of mirrors in a thriller of exquisitely constructed psychological suspense by A. J. Banner, bestselling author of The Good Neighbor. Elise Watters seems to have it all--a blissful marriage, a gorgeous Victorian home surrounded by lush gardens, and a dream job running her late mother's herbal boutique. But on the eve of her first wedding anniversary, Elise makes a shocking discovery that turns her life upside down and casts doubt on everything she thought she knew--about her marriage, her friends, and even herself. As she treads into dangerous territory, Elise is forced to wonder: Is her whole future at stake? Or is paranoia getting the best of her? If she is to believe what she sees, Elise has every reason to fear for her life...

There‘s only one way to say it: this was a poorly written book. 2-dimensional characters, oddly placed time jumps, plotting was awful. When the characters point out “what a coincidence” or “that was lucky”, you know it‘s a bad book. I kept reading it because it was short & somehow got some good reviews. Not sure how this book got published. I don‘t think I‘d read another of her books. The male characters were so over the top & unrealistic

The Poison Garden was my final read in 2019. It was a perfect length at 194 pages

Fans of the unreliable narrator will really enjoy this one. It's a real page turner full of twist that keeps the suspense building throughout the story. I found myself trusting none of the characters almost everyone is a suspect.

The ending leaves the reader satisfied all the loose ends tied up nicely in under 200 pages.

This was an easy read, but I found myself skimming paragraphs. The story isn‘t very believable and this book fell a bit short for me.

A.J. Banner, author of the upcoming 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧, is my special guest. Solitude & a place to write without interruptions are critical to a writer's success. Read about A.J.'s solution -- a unique office under the trees on her wooded property -- in 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘖𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘈𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯: https://tinyurl.com/yxr8ckzg

Tomorrow I'll review 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐆𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐧, & you can enter to win your own copy.

I enjoyed After Nightfall and was excited to read this one. Unfortunately, the main character's paranoia overwhelmed the plot and the story is never fully fleshed out. The pacing was too rushed—Banner needed to make the story more robust and to be perfectly honest, credible. A lot of what was going on was either not believable, or too coincidental. The reader isn't going to buy in, especially in a genre that has such stellar offerings.

Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review. Elise thinks she has the perfect marriage and life..all is not as it seems....Elise works from home as a herbalist and knows what plants can harm/kill people. Elise notices things keep seeming not quite right at home and aren't as she left them. Is she sleep walking again or getting paranoid? A mesmerising plot I was captivated from the first chapter.
