This Audible performance was adapted from the tagged book. This is actually a review, but because it‘s not in the Litsy system, I‘m posting it like a blurb. I really enjoyed listening to this one on Audible. It was interesting and informative. Part history lesson, part music, all poetry. Definitely a pick!

8little_paws Oh, super interesting to see this as a performance!! 3y

An incredible meditation on the lives of first generation freed peoples, their continued exploitation at the hands of those who had hoped to have them remain enslaved. The work expanded my imagination in terms of what I thought possible from the medium of poetry both in terms of storytelling and creative expression. An absolute masterpiece and one of the greatest works of art I have ever experienced.

sarahlandis This is such a convincing review! Adding to my list 4y

"We boil the air with hallelujah's balm 'cause each of us got a story to yell out in song." Jess can lift your soul in one sentence and punch you in the gut in the next. This is one of the most unusual, enjoyable, and illuminating books of poetry I've ever read.

An absolutely riveting work of poetry that blends history, biography, and musicology with a little imagination to glue it all together. Jess brings the lost voices of black performers in minstrel shows of the late 19th/early 20th centuries back to life and also pays homage to the great ragtime composer Scott Joplin through the rediscovered interviews of Julius Monroe Trotter.

balletbookworm This is also an interactive work of poetry (if you've bought your copy) - certain pages are meant to be torn out and taped together to create a cyclical conversation. A collection very worthy of a Pulitzer Prize. 7y

This is an absolutely incredible book. Technically considered a poetry collection (it just won the Pulitzer) Jess presents a history of African American artists in a unique and musical manner. In all honesty, I don't think any description I give will do it justice.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #maybookflowers #blackandwhitecovers

My Favorite Books of 2016

No. 7: Olio by Tyehimba Jess. Only poetry has the space for all this—history, theater, verse, art, hymn, humanity, a new song.
