Universal Declaration of Human Rights | 
Assigned reading for Transnational Perspectives on LGBTQI & Women‘s Rights. In thinking about the differences between students in previous schools vs here, I‘m looking forward to discussion without having to shovel a lot of toxic masculinity off the top. I do wonder how much we‘ll get into things like family privilege, though. I didn‘t know the nuclear family is a protected unit, only that it was what‘s been accepted and reinforced by society.
tournevis Yeah, the guy who wrote most of the text of this declaration, a Canadian actually, was very liberal for his time, but he was of his time. This second I forget his name, but yeah. 6y
JSW Hmmmm I struggle with this. “Define family” would be a conversation I would like to have- the intent of this document, the concept, who is family, etc etc. 6y
kgriffith @tournevis yes for 1948, this is impressive. The only problem being that, it isn‘t actually observed. 😕 6y

kgriffith @JSW Yep, that‘s a big part of it for me. Not only can families of origin be toxic, but the idea of two parents and their offspring being the only appropriate immediate family unit excludes rship structures besides monogamy, communal care for children, etc. 6y
Weaponxgirl @kgriffith this is a great conversation and please excuse if I sound rambly as I‘ve just finished a night shift. I think the emphasis on a nuclear family is misplaced because as you say they can be toxic. When it comes to children having positive role models of different sexes is important but doesn‘t need to be from a traditional source per se. I hope that made sense 6y

kgriffith @Weaponxgirl I meant to reply to this earlier, sorry for the silence! I think I agree that role models of different sexes is important, mostly because that phrasing doesn‘t reinforce the binary, or specifically prioritize masculine influence, both of which I find are often the focus of arguments for multi-adult home structures. If that makes sense 😊 6y
kgriffith @RidgewayGirl which is my sticking point. It specifies men and women being able to marry, but also doesn‘t restrict the number of men and women to engage in a marriage — I think many of the “givens” have been because religion has been allowed to inform law to such an extent, separation of church and state be damned.
