For fans of The Haunting of Hill House comes a dark tale of a mansion haunted by a legacy of tragedy and a family trapped by lies. Margot and Myron Spielman move to a new town, looking for a fresh start and an escape from the long shadow of their past. But soon after they buy Rawlingswood, a foreclosed mansion rumored to be haunted, they realize they're in for more of the same...or worse. After a renovation fraught with injuries and setbacks, the Spielmans move in to the century-old house, and their problems quickly escalate. The home's beautiful facade begins to crumble around them when their teenage son uncovers disturbing details of Rawlingswood's history--a history of murder, betrayal, and financial ruin. The Spielmans' own shameful secrets and lies become harder to hide as someone or something inside the house watches their every move. As tensions build between the family members, the home's dark history threatens to repeat itself. Margot and Myron must confront their own ghosts and Rawlingswood's buried past before the house becomes their undoing.

One of those books about “haunted houses” but for me was more drama or stories about the families that lived in that house. A “pinch” of paranormal element, but for me was more superstitions. Apparently the house is cursed and people died in the house. There are some historical information about the area and author gives references. Still, I enjoyed it but not loved it. Not scary, it is more a suspense & mystery. 3.4⭐️It has better rating in GR.

Excellent historical fiction set in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. A family, with a lot of struggles, buys an old, abandoned mansion when they relocate from Boston. They renovate the house in immaculate style and quickly begin experiencing strange occurrences. The tragic stories of the families who previously lived in the house are weaved throughout the book. The floor plans of the house are included.

Lauram This book has been on my mind after seeing your post. There are loads of really beautiful mansions in Cleveland Heights- it‘s really hard to imagine any of them being abandoned or neglected because it‘s a very vibrant and busy area. I‘m going to see if I can get my hands on this book today! 4y
NatalieR @Lauram ☺️ I hope you enjoy it. She‘s a great writer. At very end of the book, the author explains the historical aspects of the book and talks about where her imagination came into play. She acknowledges the beautiful homes in this area and that the house she writes about is purely fiction. Hopefully this story will take your mind on a wild ride! 😆 4y

After buying and renovating a huge, old house, a family then encounters some odd goings-on after moving in. Is it haunted? Is something else happening? Good creep factor with the house‘s history told through 4 previous families. There was an odd info dump near the end in the oldest story line that didn‘t quite work for me, but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Soubhiville Both girls in one picture ❤️. Do you have a treat or are you just talking to them? 5y
Hooked_on_books @Soubhiville Here I was just talking to them. I moved to get a picture and they both jumped up from where they were, so I positioned them and went with it. I‘m kind of amazed it worked! 😆 5y

I‘m actually kind of bummed our power is back on. I was enjoying reading this creepy/possibly haunted house book by flashlight and without phone distractions.

Soubhiville 🤣 sometimes it‘s nice to have the excuse to focus on a book because you can‘t do anything else. A creepy book by flashlight sounds fun! 5y

This book reminds me very much of The Haunting of Hill House in that it is the house who is watching...the house described in the form of a human body; the wood it‘s tired bones, the windows as eyes watching... also in true Haunting of Hill House fashion, the reader is left to wonder if this is truly a haunting of the supernatural or of one‘s own mind.
