Night Witches
Night Witches | Kathryn Lasky
6 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
16-year-old Valya knows what it feels like to fly. She's a pilot who's always felt more at home soaring through the sky than down on earth. But since the Germans surrounded Stalingrad, Valya's been forced to stay on the ground and watch her city crumble. When her mother is killed during the siege, Valya is left with one burning desire: to join up with her older sister, a member of the famous and feared Night Witches-a brigade of young female pilots. Using all her wits, Valya manages to get past the German blockade and find the Night Witches' base . . . and that's when the REAL danger starts. The women have been assigned a critical mission. If they succeed, they'll inflict serious damage on the Nazis. If they fail, they'll face death . . . or even worse horrors. Historical fiction master Lasky sheds light on the war's unsung heroes-daredevil girls who took to the skies to fight for their country-in an action-packed thrill ride that'll leave you electrified and breathless.

A random social media blurb about the Night Witches of WWII inspired me to add this to my TBR.

There *should* be a movie made about these women!

Rachel.Rencher I saw that, too!! 5mo
Oldschool_millenial @Rachel.Rencher I wanna add a nonfiction about them to my TBR, but for now I'm easing in with historical fiction 5mo
Rachel.Rencher @Oldschool_millenial If you find any good non-fics let me know. I want to try to work them into my lesson plans next year! 5mo
Oldschool_millenial @Rachel.Rencher Sweet! To be honest I'm not much of a non-fiction reader, BUT this is an instance where I'll probably make a few exceptions 😅 5mo
Oldschool_millenial @Rachel.Rencher A different topic: I don't know if this is in your curriculum, but I highly recommend this short historical fiction novel. I read it in class in seventh grade and it was the one and only time I even heard about Iqbal Masih until senior year of high school--and most of those classmates didn't know who he was. 5mo

#ManicMonday is just plane awesome, @JoScho 🛩 😁

📖 - “Night Witches” by Kathryn Lasky (a very underrated historical fiction adventure)!

🎥 - “Airplane!” (“Surely a lot of people will pick this movie?” “They probably will... and don‘t call me Shirley!”

🎶 - “Jet City Woman” by Queenryche

JoScho Love your puns! Thanks for playing 🛩💙🛩 6mo

Ok! I need help!! I recently saw either a movie or book that was about Russian/Soviet Union female pilots in WW2. It was called something like sisters of the sky or something and i cannot think of it or find it. Any leads???

IndyHannaJones @Hestapleton hmmmm....I don't think so? I remember the cover; however this looks really cool! 12mo

Look, I am no expert of these matters, but surely soviet kids had their own stories to read. In 3 chapters, I have read about Glinda, Huck & Peter Pan. #questions #alsolotsaboutflying #curentlyreading

pocketmermaid You got me curious, so I did some googling and found this: http://expositions.nlr.ru/eng/child_domlit/ 3y
