Night Witches: A Novel of World War Two
Night Witches: A Novel of World War Two | Kathryn Lasky
7 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
16-year-old Valya knows what it feels like to fly. She's a pilot who's always felt more at home soaring through the sky than down on earth. But since the Germans surrounded Stalingrad, Valya's been forced to stay on the ground and watch her city crumble. When her mother is killed during the siege, Valya is left with one burning desire: to join up with her older sister, a member of the famous and feared Night Witches-a brigade of young female pilots. Using all her wits, Valya manages to get past the German blockage and find the Night Witches' base . . . and that's when the REAL danger starts. The women have been assigned a critical mission. If they succeed, they'll inflict serious damage on the Nazis. If they fail, they'll face death . . . or even worse horrors. Historical fiction master Lasky sheds light on the war's unsung heroes-daredevil girls who took to the skies to fight for their country-in an action-packed thrill ride that'll leave you electrified and breathless.

Mehso-so

Somehow finished this one in a day! A quick read for my work book club. The writing is geared towards a younger audience so it was easy to read and straightforward. I felt like things moved quite rapidly which is usually what happens with younger audienced books but it left something to be desired. A young Russian girl‘s dream to fly with the infamous Night Witches.

A random social media blurb about the Night Witches of WWII inspired me to add this to my TBR.

There *should* be a movie made about these women!

Rachel.Rencher I saw that, too!! 5y
Oldschool_millenial @Rachel.Rencher I wanna add a nonfiction about them to my TBR, but for now I'm easing in with historical fiction 5y
Rachel.Rencher @Oldschool_millenial If you find any good non-fics let me know. I want to try to work them into my lesson plans next year! 5y
Oldschool_millenial @Rachel.Rencher Sweet! To be honest I'm not much of a non-fiction reader, BUT this is an instance where I'll probably make a few exceptions 😅 5y
Oldschool_millenial @Rachel.Rencher A different topic: I don't know if this is in your curriculum, but I highly recommend this short historical fiction novel. I read it in class in seventh grade and it was the one and only time I even heard about Iqbal Masih until senior year of high school--and most of those classmates didn't know who he was. 5y

#ManicMonday is just plane awesome, @JoScho 🛩 😁

📖 - “Night Witches” by Kathryn Lasky (a very underrated historical fiction adventure)!

🎥 - “Airplane!” (“Surely a lot of people will pick this movie?” “They probably will... and don‘t call me Shirley!”

🎶 - “Jet City Woman” by Queenryche

JoScho Love your puns! Thanks for playing 🛩💙🛩 5y
tammysue 👍🏻😂 5y
DaveGreen7777 @tammysue It‘s the “Don‘t call me Shirley” reference that got me the thumbs up, isn‘t it?! 😂 5y

Ok! I need help!! I recently saw either a movie or book that was about Russian/Soviet Union female pilots in WW2. It was called something like sisters of the sky or something and i cannot think of it or find it. Any leads???

IndyHannaJones @Hestapleton hmmmm....I don't think so? I remember the cover; however this looks really cool! 6y

Look, I am no expert of these matters, but surely soviet kids had their own stories to read. In 3 chapters, I have read about Glinda, Huck & Peter Pan. #questions #alsolotsaboutflying #curentlyreading

pocketmermaid You got me curious, so I did some googling and found this: http://expositions.nlr.ru/eng/child_domlit/ 8y
