Sex in the Museum
Sex in the Museum: My Unlikely Career at New York's Most Provocative Museum | Sarah Forbes
2 posts | 3 read | 21 to read
Sarah Forbes was in graduate school when she stumbled upon a museum dedicated to . . . sex. The anthropology student hesitated when her boyfriend suggested she apply for a job, but apply she did, and it wasnt long before a part-time position at New Yorks MUSEUM OF SEX lead to a gig as the museum's curator. That was over twelve years ago. Now Saraha married mother of twoproudly sports her title as Curator of Sex. In SEX IN THE MUSEUM, Sarah invites readers to travel from suburban garages where men and women build sex machines, to factories that make sex toys, to labyrinthine archives of erotica collectors. Escorting us in to the hidden world of sex, illuminating the never-talked-about communities and eccentricities of our sexual subcultures, and telling her own personal story of a decade at The Museum of Sex, Sarah asks readers to grapple with the same questions she did: when it comes to sex, what is good, bad, deviant, normal? Do such terms even apply? If everyone has sexual secrets, is it possible to really know another person and be known by them? And importantly, in our hyper-sexualized world, is it still possible to fall in love?

So far, so good! Three books finished and three prompts complete ✅ since I‘m going for 31 books this month, I‘m going to try to only use one prompt per book. #jumpstart2021

Lizpixie Wow, you‘re totally blowing me out the water! I‘m having trouble sticking to a book, I‘ve finally settled on a true crime audiobook about the Laci Peterson case🎧 3y
DieAReader 😨 hmm...& here I've spent the last year telling (& berating) myself for really sucking at every book bingo challenges & should just move on. I'm lucky if I end up with any completed prompt reads tbh. I thought it was always 1 book per square/prompt.

Today's Lesson (to me): Ask more questions about reading challenges instead of assuming & doing it wrong or, which is more often the case if I'm not “getting it“, just give up before starting.

Clwojick @Squidget yeah, I think most challenges like this are “one book can check off multiple prompts”, unless the host specificity says otherwise. You‘re safe to assume that any I host are one book = multiple prompts 😜 3y
DieAReader @Clwojick I knew I should have asked before🤦🏻‍♀️ Thanks for clarifying for me! I totally appreciate it! 3y

#TBRtemptation post! 12 years ago In anthropology grad school, her boyfriend told her to apply for a part-time job at the Museum of Sex. She eventually became curator, & is married with 2 kids. Now she travels to find garages that make sex machines, factories that make sex toys, & collectors' basements. For this book she looks at questions like: what is good, bad, normal, deviant sex? Are we hypersexualized? Etc. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😻

Zelma Sounds great! I read a memoir that was a bit similar years ago but forgot the name or author; it focused on her career at a sex-based publication and as an erotic writer. Really fascinating. 7y
Zelma Here it is! I remember really enjoying this one. 7y
