This was fantastic. The complexity of the relationships of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and their inner circles was astounding. Scandals and betrayals, commitment and love. The same people were villains and heroes in the span of a day. An extraordinary time.

#Adventathon day 2. This isn‘t holiday related but I read it yesterday and I think it fits the times:

“This is no ordinary time, and no time for weighting anything except what we can do best for the country as a whole.”
-Eleanor Roosevelt

Interesting interview of Ethan Hawke in The Guardian promoting his new novel A Bright Ray of Darkness. Seems like he and I have something in common - we both love Doris Kearns Goodwin. (I read No Ordinary Time last year and it really is special.) Here‘s the link to the interview:

I actually finished this extraordinary book a while ago - I‘m so behind! This book focuses on the Roosevelts handling of WWII from the perspective of home front. This book felt very timely to me given the current reckoning we are undergoing due to our history of systematic racism. There are so many stories peppered through out that show how racism was a national issue, not just a Southern one. I learned a lot. Well annotated, worthwhile read.

I started a re-read of this today. Happy to see FDR also worked from home during challenging times 😁

This is a book on my TBR for #FunFridayPhoto. The full title is No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II. I'd really like to read it especially after visiting Hyde Park this summer.

The only thing I love more than discussing politics is reading about politics. #augustphotochallenge #booksandpolitics

MrBook I have 4 of those! Love political books, particularly presidential history 😊👍🏻. 8y
Alisnazzy #BookPorn 😍😍😍😍 8y
KrisConstantReader Yes! You have some great books there. Books about politics are my favorite. 8y

TheSpinecrackersBookClub This is a pretty decent stack. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi Holy cats! That's a ginormous stack. 8y
LauraBeth Sadly, this stack doesn't even begin to cover my love for Presidential History @MrBook. I'm on a quest to read at least one biogeography of every president but I get bogged down and will read several about a particular one (Lincoln gets a lot of the blame!) 😺 8y
LauraBeth @Ambrosnazzy 😻😻😻 8y
LauraBeth Mine too @KrisConstantReader - I majored in it in college just so I could read books about politics 😺 8y
LauraBeth That's my old girl @StephBengtson - she's 16 😻😻 8y
LauraBeth I ❤️ Doris Goodwin a lot too @MeganMarieWrites. She's fantastic 😺 8y
LauraBeth Thanks @Lacythebookworm and @CherylDeFranceschi - no cats were harmed with the ginormous stacking 😻😻 8y
MrBook @LauraBeth 😆👍🏻 I was on a Founders kick most of las year. So enlightening! 8y
BooksPieAndCoffee I love Bob Woodward! All The President's Men is still one of my all time favorite books! ❤️ 8y
BookishFeminist Yes 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 8y
Laalaleighh Sign me up for the "loves discussing politics" list. Maybe we should form some sort of political book club! 8y
Trav Yep, I'm with you on the discussing politics part! 8y
LauraBeth @BooksPieAndCoffee Bob Woodward is great - ❤️ everything he does! 8y
LauraBeth That would be awesome - I would ❤️ to do a political book club - I'm looking at you @Laalaleighh, @trav, @BookishFeminist, @mrbook, @BooksPieAndCoffee, @MeganMarieWrites, @KrisConstantReader, @Ambrosnazzy and anyone else I've missed 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @LauraBeth I have a feminist & social justice book club currently in the works! Planning/hoping to get things set for the fall. 👍🏼 @LitsyFeministBookClub 8y
Alisnazzy @LauraBeth oh I'm down. 8y
LauraBeth That sounds awesome @BookishFeminist - looking forward to that! 8y
MrBook @LauraBeth The only thing with a political bookclub is that differing political views tend to lead to blocks/unfriendings/ad hominems/ etc. I take the Jefferson approach of everyone being my friend regardless & the Voltaire approach of defending your right to speak your mind no matter what. We're all mature, civilized folks who have lived in democratic society, but that doesn't pan out on social media usually 😔. Love your idea regardless! 8y
LauraBeth I agree @MrBook. I actually like hearing others' views that differ from mine because usually I learn something. It's a small world when we only surround ourselves with people who are just like us a then what would we learn? Maybe I'll start a Religion book club instead. What could go wrong? 8y
MrBook @LauraBeth Oh noooo, lol. 😉 just playing. If you start either one, I'll probably join if time permits. My mindset is the same as yours, just want to make sure that folks are fine with differing thoughts--not necessarily open-minded persay if someone thinks strongly a certain way, but rather tolerant and cordial 😊👌🏻. 8y
Laalaleighh @MrBook @LauraBeth I love hearing other people's viewpoints! I also don't mind having my own views challenged. I guess it's the poli-sci major in me. But I do understand how for some people, it's more personal. It would be fun if it was a group of people that just looked at everything as an intellectual thought experiment... And maybe we just avoided anything to do with current domestic politics? There's a lot of other great topics out there!! 8y
KrisConstantReader @LauraBeth count me in for sure! 8y
MrBook @Laalaleighh ? Wait-wait-wait-wait-wait....*rubs eyes with the sides of my fists and blinks* Did I....did I just read that right? ? *blink blink* I did! Yoouu have a degree in poli sci too?! You're the first person I've met--err, "met"--after college who has one too! Amaaaazing. #KindredSpirits. I told you all that LGP came together naturally for good reasons ???. We must talk, oh we must talk! 8y
LauraBeth @MrBook and @Laalaleighh - we all have degrees in Poli Sci - THAT's why we're so open-minded and intellectual 😀 I was pre-law with my Poli Sci track (took the LSATs and everything), waited until I got accepted to law school to decide to move to NYC to pursue marketing/advertising, which is where I've spent my career - but I'd go back and major in Poli Sci all over again. Let me guess - you guys were history minors as well? 😺 8y
MrBook @LauraBeth 😳...😱...😆...😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻!!! You too?! #KindredSpirits! 🙌🏻 I started as a History major. Wound up Poli Sci (emphasis International Comparative Politics)and English (emphasis Middle English Lit). 8y
Laalaleighh @MrBook @LauraBeth excuse me while I freak out over the "emphasis in comparative intl." because, same. But no I've taken some history classes but my minor is Econ/Chinese. And I say "is" because I'm not done yet. Long story but basically I started at a state school, my bf is an aerospace engineer, I took a break to come with him while he does his masters and when he's done in December he's moving us to the DC area so I can transfer and finish. 8y
Laalaleighh He offered to stay where we were while I finished but I liked the idea of getting to transfer to a more well-funded program within driving distance of all the internships. So it worked for both of us. Although I have been extremely bored the past year I'm excited that were very close to him getting a job and me going to a school that takes their poli-sci program seriously. 8y
Laalaleighh we're* 8y
LauraBeth That's awesome @MrBook 😀 A move to DC will be great @Laalaleighh! I interned for the Senate while I was a senior in college (back in '92 - yes, I'm old as dirt) and DC is the place to be. You'll love it 😀 Sadly, it was also what turned me off from wanting to work in politics 😔 8y
MrBook @Laalaleighh @LauraBeth You two are sooooo awesome 😁😎👍🏻👌🏻🙌🏻! @Laalaleighh That is incredibly ineffably cool we both have the same emphasis 😂😂😂👍🏻!!! @LauraBeth I can completely understand why 😕. 8y
Laalaleighh @LauraBeth I'm looking forward to it so much! Although I'm not too interested in domestic politics. I would much rather do like a state dept. internship or something similar! I know quotes few people that are congressional staffers though! 8y
Laalaleighh @MrBook I know right! Although I'll be emphasizing in political economy from now on. (Which I am so incredibly excited about!) 8y
MrBook @Laalaleighh oh man ?, don't remind me about my political econ classes. One of those instructors was my advisor, Lol. I would get correct answers, but they'd mark them wrong because I didn't go about the question the "proper way". Sounds like Common Core ?. 8y
LauraBeth I missed out @Laalaleighh and @MrBook because Political Economics wasn't even offered back in my day. People who wanted to pursue this track usually had to have a double major in Poli Sci and Econ. 8y
Laalaleighh @MrBook @LauraBeth International Political Economy is so fascinating to me! Although I've never run into the procedural problem you mentioned @MrBook basically anything to do with international politics is my jam. @laurabeth it's still pretty rare in the states. Lots of schools have classes in it but very few have actual programs. The one I'm going to be doing is a joint Poltics/Philosophy/Economics or PPE which is based of the UK approach to PS 8y
