A deeply-researched dive into the Alcott family that left me w/strong feelings about the parents. Bronson was the worst. He never worked & depended on others to support his family so he could maintain his high morals. He left his family to go live elsewhere so they didn‘t distract him. Louisa & her mom were close & alike in temperament. They were both excellent writers & it was Abigail who encouraged her. A must-read IF you are a huge Alcott fan.

Daisey Great review! I felt much the same way when I listened to this. 12mo
LeahBergen I thought this book was very well done. 👍 12mo
AvidReader25 @Daisey it feels ridiculous that Bronson gets so much credit for Louisa‘s upbringing. 12mo

I finally watched the new Masterpiece series of Little Women and followed it up with the Masterpiece mini-documentary on Orchard House ... and now I‘m off on an Alcott binge. 🙄

This dual biography begins with the author (a great-niece of Marmee) digging through a trunk of Alcott letters and memorabilia in her mother‘s attic and I‘m LOVING it so far.

Leftcoastzen I like the way you roll!👍😁 6y
Daisey I really enjoyed this one! 6y
rubyslippersreads I need to catch up on that LW adaptation and some of my Alcott bios too. #somanybooksandTVshowssolittletime 😄 6y

LeahBergen @GypsyKat And watch the little 30-minute Orchard House documentary they made to go with the series afterwards. It has a couple of the actors talking in it, too. 6y

I'm a lifelong fan of Louisa May Alcott, starting with her most well-known books gifted to me by my grandma and moving on to her other writing. I've enjoyed a few biographies, but I loved this book about the Louisa and her mother Abigail. It really puts the emphasis on Abigail's life and experiences, as well as the impact of those on Louisa's life and writing.

It‘s a beautiful day for an #audiowalk and I‘m really enjoying this book. It‘s great to hear more about the details of Abigail‘s family and life, but it is not at all improving my opinion of Bronson.

Dogearedcopy LOL, For a minute there I was confused because I thought you were taking about Bronson Pinchot who is an audiobook narrator and I was wondering why he was assigned to read this! 6y
Daisey @Dogearedcopy Oops! I didn‘t even think about that, but I guess unless you‘re already pretty familiar with the topic this is a pretty vague post. 6y
batsy Wow! Look at your view 😊 6y
Daisey @batsy Thanks! Yes, it is a beautiful place to walk and will be even more so when the trees leaf out. (edited) 6y

Yes, I‘m already listening to an audiobook, but this one caught my eye today and I couldn‘t resist! Louisa May Alcott is one of my favorite childhood authors, and I‘ve read and enjoyed a few biographies. So much of the biographical information emphasizes the impact of her father Bronson on her life, but this one focuses on her mother Abigail and their relationship. I‘m completely intrigued!

rubyslippersreads I have this as an ebook but haven't read it yet. 6y

Serendipity. Yesterday made a quick stop to the used book store to drop off some books and Marmee and Louisa jumped out at me . It had been on my radar as I want to visit Concord, MA soon. Then went to the library and The Alcotts jumped out at me from their used book shelves. The latter states on inner cover flap that this (as of 1980) is the first time that Bronson Alcott's erotic poetry has been reprinted 😮😳.

LeahBergen Awesome! 👍🏼 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen they're high up on my TBR now because of the trip plans (April) so I may share some ofBronson's poetry if it's not too...well, you know... 😂! 7y

I listened to Marmee & Louisa earlier this year and just started Little Women. The first is a biography of Louisa May Alcott and her mother, and it is fascinating. I've always loved the Little Women movie. Now that I'm finally experiencing the book, I'm glad I listened to the biography first. It just gives so many insights into the themes and characters of the story. #fictionnonfictionpairings #seasonsreadings2016
