This poet wrote a poem I love, called Church-Going. Whenever I think about the physical space of church, I think of these lines:

“It pleases me to stand in silence here;
A serious house on serious earth it is,

And that much never can be obsolete,
Since someone will forever be surprising
A hunger in himself to be more serious…”

Now, compare that with the pictured text. 😂 If you‘re not already following this Instagram account, you should be.

High Windows felt like a long, gut feeling. We‘d read pieces from this book out loud to each other at parties in LA…

"They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra just for you."

- This Be the Verse

Bookwomble Surprised this one wasn't already on here 😉 6y
saresmoore Ha! Ain‘t that the truth? 6y
quietlycuriouskate But they were fucked up in their turn... (as I recall) 6y
Bookwomble @kathedron Indeed they were, "By fools in old-style hats and coats,/Who half the time were soppy-stern/And half at one another's throats." ? 6y
Bookwomble @saresmoore To a degree - obviously have to bear in mind what our kids will think of us! 🤣 6y

This book is on my TBR list. So far I am not making much progress with my desire to make a start on reading poetry but I do love browsing the entries in the #poetrychallenge2018
I thought this book would do well for the #readingresolutions photo challenge. Today's prompt is #windows
@Jess7

MayJasper I am sure it is just me but I find Shakespeare less impenetrable. 😥 8y
MayJasper I am such a dunce, I so admire everyone who enjoys such poetry 👍 8y
arlenefinnigan @MayJasper "Most people ignore most poetry because most poetry ignores most people" Adrian Mitchell 8y
MayJasper So sorry for my original statement. I think the appalling heatwave was making me cranky. Now I've read Solar half a dozen times and pondered it I am starting to see a way in. 8y
arlenefinnigan @MayJasper no apology needed! Some poetry is wilfully, needlessly obscure. 8y

And that's a wrap on his four poetry collections. I liked this one, and, well, I liked them all. The famous "This Be The Verse" is one of the decent poems, but it's overshadowed by Larkin's strong use of natural imagery and character sketches. He's so good!
