An Orphan's Throne Magic has broken free over the Twelve Kingdoms. The population is beset by shapeshifters and portents, landscapes that migrate, uncanny allies who are not quite human and enemies eager to take advantage of the chaos. Dafne Mailloux is no adventurer--she's a librarian. But the High Queen trusts Dafne's ability with languages, her way of winnowing the useful facts from a dusty scroll, and even more important, the subtlety and guile that three decades under the thumb of a tyrant taught her. Dafne never thought to need those skills again. But she accepts her duty. Until her journey drops her into the arms of a barbarian king. He speaks no tongue she knows but that of power, yet he recognizes his captive as a valuable pawn. Dafne must submit to a wedding of alliance, becoming a prisoner-queen in a court she does not understand. If she is to save herself and her country, she will have to learn to read the heart of a wild stranger. And there are more secrets written there than even Dafne could suspect Praise for The Mark of the Tala "Magnificent a richly detailed fantasy world." --"RT Book Reviews," 41/2 stars, Top Pick "Well written and swooningly romantic." --"Library Journal," starred review"

"This is why it is perilous to ignore a librarian." - I think this is first book I've read where the romance is equal part of the story to the fantasy part rather than being a secondary storyline. I liked it. ????#romantsy #RITA

Dragon Sounds good, stacking! 😀🐉 7y

30% in and h is just finally meeting the H. 🙄 This is why more traditional fantasy and I don't always get along, too much buildup. I'd almost always rather be dumped into the middle of the action. Also, being based on a previous trilogy means this first third has been about a lot of people and events that mean pretty much nothing to me. We'll see how it goes from here.

Anyone else follow SmartBitchesTrashyBooks on Twitter? They are always posting book deals and it is bad for my wallet. I haven't been on Twitter much in months but I popped on tonight and ended up buying this one. Rita finalist for fantasy romance, sign me up! (Except I just found out it's a spinoff so I hope I'm not too confused...) #romantsy #romantasy

Dogearedcopy I subscribe to their Friday e-mail, and there's usually at least one or two (or three) titles that that end up on my e-reader before the day is through! 😉 8y
MarriedtoMrT @Dogearedcopy That's why I haven't subscribed! Random Twitter checks are bad enough. 😏 (edited) 8y

Fantasy romance that hits all the right notes with a nice balance of world building and romance - and the heroine is a librarian!

I really wished that this books description had told me that this was a new series based on another one. The first 1/4 of the book, I was totally lost. I kept thinking that this book had to have a backstory and I was right. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed this book.I loved the main character and story
