The Program: Inside the Mind of Keith Raniere and the Rise and Fall of NXIVM | Toni Natalie, Chet Hardin
5 posts | 5 read | 5 to read
A jaw-dropping insider look into the world of the so-called "Hollywood Sex Cult" NXIVM chronicling the rise of enigmatic cult leader, Keith Raniere, from its "Patient Zero," his former girlfriend and test subject for his coercive control techniques. Many have heard of NXIVM and its creator, Keith Raniere, the unassuming Albany man now prosecuted for ensnaring tens of thousands of people in the US, Mexico, Canada and elsewhere, to do his bidding and pay millions of dollars to participate in his self-improvement methodology. But where did Keith Raniere begin? Enter single mother Toni Natalie, Keith's Patient Zero, the first one indoctrinated into Raniere's methodology and the first one to escape. THE PROGRAM begins with the origin story of NXIVM, follows its rise to international prominence, and takes the reader into the downfall of Raniere through Toni's eyes. During this time she bore witness to the evolution of his methodology, including his use of sex, blackmail, and employment of psychological tools such as neuro-linguistic programming to control and punish those who would not heed his wishes. She uniquely details the fortunes lost and the lives left in disarray that she witnessed contemporaneously, including members of DOS, a group of women coerced into sexual acts under the guise of a "women's empowerment" inner circle, whom Raniere exercised extreme control over directly and through his lieutenants. But far from being a victim's story, in the spirit of Erin Brockovich, Toni's is a nuanced narrative of a multi-dimensional woman saving herself, and then working tirelessly to help other women do the same for themselves. Today, Toni is happy, reunited with her son, and surrounded by friends and family--it is this perspective that makes her such a unique storyteller.

I disappeared again after my cryptic post about how the previous 8 months had sucked… well, the following year wasn‘t much better. A lot of changes. Starting in June 2021: I lost my childhood dog (not the one pictured here), then my dad (who I flew to Hawaii on my own to say goodbye to; a whole story in itself), then my beloved JackyCat. Those are all the things that led up to my posts a year ago. Since then… (more in comments)

MolliesaurusRex I should also mention I got my Master‘s degree shortly after my dad passed - I submitted my final assignments two weeks after he took his last breath. Since that time, I‘ve realized I very very likely have autism, I adopted the sweetest three-legged pitbull (pictured) and left the classroom to work with individuals with disabilities in a whole new capacity. Now I‘m working on finding myself again, so I‘m back! 12mo
MolliesaurusRex I‘ve missed this community so much, and I‘m hoping that coming back to it will help me get back to myself after everything that‘s happened in the past two years!🥰🥰🥰🥰 12mo
Jenken1998 Take your time. You have been through a lot this year. Hugs. 12mo
MolliesaurusRex @Jenken1998 thank you❤️ I only just started coping with it all in the past six months or so, and with the encouragement of my therapist and friends, I‘m working on focusing on me and my happiness. Books have always brought me that, so coming back to this amazing community feels like a great step in the right direction! 12mo

Worth the $1.99 kindle buy! I enjoyed this look at the founding of NXIVM, the cult.

The “counseling” sessions performed on the author were used for the early versions of the mind control programming of NXIVM. After she defected, later members were taught she was Lucifer on Earth.

While she covers subsequent, more depraved, actions of the leader, she did not witness them. But she was chased, harassed & litigated into bankruptcy after leaving. ⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ a comprehensive, frightening look at a cult from start to finish. 3.5⭐️ 4y

A book about a crazy ass cult should not be this boring, even at 2.25x speed. Keith Raniere makes for one boring ass sociopath, and the author got out of the cult before all the crazy sex branding started.

DGRachel 2.25 x speed?! I'm impressed. The best I've ever managed was 1.5 for any sustained length of time. I was so desperate on one book I attempted 1.75 but my ears and brain could not keep up with the narrator! 5y
MidnightBookGirl @DGRachel It definitely depends on the narrator and what I'm doing, but 2x is my preferred speed. I know it's bananas, 5y
DGRachel No judgement, just amazement! My brain just can't keep up with that narrative speed. I am truly in awe (and maybe a little jealous)! 😍 5y
Kappadeemom I enjoyed the podcast about this cult (Uncover) 5y
MidnightBookGirl @Kappadeemom Yeah, the cult itself is interesting, but this take on it just wasn't, at least for me. 5y

Starting October off with a little real life horror! I mean, I would love to think I wouldn't fall for a cult leader, but I'd probably be susceptible to a Litsy themed cult... ;) #OctoberReads #LittensDressedInBlood
