After severely injuring Peter Driscal in an empty parking lot, troublemaker Cole Matthews is in major trouble. But instead of jail time, Cole is given an alternative: a one-year banishment to a remote Alaskan island. This program—called Circle Justice—is based on Native American traditions that provide healing for the criminal mind. To avoid serious jail time, Cole resolves to go. While there, Cole is mauled by a mysterious white bear and left for dead. Thoughts of his abusive parents, helpless Peter, and his violent anger cause him to examine the root of his troubled ways.Author Ben Mikaelson delivers a poignant depiction of the vicious cycle of violence and one boy's journey to healing. Supports the Common Core State Standards

This was recommended to me by a Teacher who reads it aloud to her junior high class. I can see why they like it. It is quite dramatic. Very unrealistic but high drama with some redemption for one of the most unlikable characters I have ever read. I did find the focus on healing to be interesting and while I have my doubts, I have many doubts about our traditional system of punishment.

Violent troublemaker Cole Matthews is in major trouble for beating up a classmate. But instead of jail time, Cole is given another option: attend Circle Justice, an alternative program that sends juvenile offenders to a remote Alaskan Island to focus on changing their ways. Can he be transformed/healed? #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

This is an amazing RF Napra Nautilus award winning novel. This is a great IR for the classroom. This is a story of a boy named Cole who beat up a kid terribly because he was a bully. Instead of getting jail time Cole chooses to go to a remote island and do work. He encounters a spirit bear instead of leaving it at peace he attacks it and gets mauled. He learns a lot after he leaves the island early due to injuries and returns with a new heart.

KatiaP ESOL strategy you can use is 16 integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing activities and UDL principle 6.4 enhancing capacity for monitoring progress. You can do these by giving students activities and questions after each chapter. This will help monitor how much they understand. More on the author at https://www.benmikaelsen.com/ 5y
Tabitha_H I actually read this book while I was in HighSchool it was a great book. The author website is a great resource. 5y
DrSpalding I agree with Tabatha that this may be a book for the later middle school or high school grades. Good choice nonetheless! You are consistently using the author website which is truly one of the best places to go to see how you can use their book in your classroom. 5y

For what it was, it was generally an ok story. I find myself drawn to the human conflict and growth through this story, add that up with a surprising ending I hadn‘t really seen coming I guess I was pleasantly surprised. All in all, it was ok.

I began reading Touching Spirit Bear with my 8th grade students today, and none of them even noticed my bear leggings that I wore for the occasion. I recommend this book for anyone who loves survival stories and dynamic stories of redemption, but I especially recommend it for teenage boys!

Blair_Reads Love your leggings :) 8y
