Good Night Owl | Greg Pizzoli

Pickpick

This F book is a great RA for the classroom. An owl tries to ho to sleep but can't because he hears a squeaking. He spends all night trying to find the squeaking and even goes through some drastic measures. This book is a fun read for the kids and they would love to see what the owl does because he can't sleep. More on the author at https://www.gregpizzoli.com/

KatiaP I would use ESOL strategy 22, giving enough time to respond to questions. There are many questions I could ask while reading this book and being patient and waiting for responses is a helpful strategy. The UDL principle I would use is facilitate personal coping skills and strategies (9.2) by talking about what we do if something is bothering us and how should we handle it. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y
DrSpalding Going straight to the author is a smart move. Excellent resources to assist you in using these books in your future classroom. He is an award winner multiple times over! 5y

This F book is great for a S in the classroom. An old lady went on a walk and as she walked different types of clothing would appear in front of her and she would tell them go away I am not afraid of you but she would always walk faster. For the storytelling you can be each thing that comes up to her and you can do the stomp, wiggle, clap, and so on that the book tells you about. About author: https://filmmedia.berkeley.edu/people/linda-williams/

KatiaP UDL 1.1 offer ways of customizing the display of information is perfect for storytelling because you are not just reading the story to them, but are putting on a performance. ESOL strategy 15 reinforce the key ideas again and again is great for this book because it is very repetitive. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y
DrSpalding This is the perfect book for a storytelling and you aligned your universal design and English learner strategies well. I usually perform an interactive read aloud with this one around Halloween! This is a fun way to incorporate the book as well. 5y

Among the Hidden | Margaret Peterson Haddix

This RF Sunshine State Young Reader award winning book is great for an IR or LC book. This book is about a society in which families cannot have more than 2 kids but Luke is one of the shadow children that are not supposed to be alive but is hidden. He had no idea what the outside world was like until he saw a light go on in the neighbors house when no one was home. More on the author at http://haddixbooks.com/

KatiaP The UDL principle I would use is 3.2 highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships by after each chapter talk about what is happening in the story and what are the important features. For ESOL I would implement is 8 using direct instruction. I will model and explain what the students should be talking about and what they should be getting from the reading 5y
DrSpalding You are fulfilling the elements of the rubric! Nice alignment and nice summary. 5y

This P book is great for a RA in the classroom. This book has many silly poems that would interest the students and it even has a great variety of poems. My personal favorite was Deep In Our Refrigerator which talked about the food that you leave and let get all moldy because you don't want to throw it away which I can relate to. You can find the author's website at http://jackprelutsky.com/

KatiaP The ESOL strategy I would use is 10 using think, pair, and share after each poem students can talk to each other and tell us what the poem was about. The IDL principle I would use is 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols by stopping and talking about certain words he used and talk about the images in the book and their relation to the poem 5y
DrSpalding Reading aloud poetry often is recommended! Just think of the article you read about using poetry especially with reluctant readers in your future classroom. Choral poetry, echo poetry and independent poetry readings work well. They are short and quick and expose students to the beauty of words. 5y

Gingerbread Baby | Jan Brett

Pickpick

This TL book is great for a DR for the kids. Someone can be the gingerbread baby and others can be the characters that tried to catch him. This is a story about kids who accidentally cooked a gingerbread baby because they didn't wait long enough for him to cook. The gingerbread baby runs out the door and the whole town including the animals try to catch him but don't succeed. Luckily Matty comes up with a plan on how to catch him.

KatiaP Authors website: https://www.janbrett.com/. UDL principle 7.2 optimize relevance, value, and authenticity can be used by having students go on their own gingerbread baby hunt and leaving them clues to help find him. I can implement ESOL strategy 31 writing instructions and problems using shorter and less complex sentences by making the clues easy to read and understand. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y
DrSpalding This is an excellent resource! You could have an entire Jan Brett classroom with the many resources she provides. I love the idea of having the students go on their own gingerbread baby hunt! How fun. Help students see the joy of reading Katia! 5y

This RF book is great RA for teaching acceptance for yourself and your culture. When Unhei moves to America from Korea she does not like her name and decides to tell her class she does not have a name and that they should put names in a jar to help her decide. She befriends a boy named Joey and with his help she starts to appreciate her name. More on the author at https://www.yangsookchoi.com/

KatiaP This is a great book for ESOL students as they may not have American names so building on prior knowledge strategy 4 is great for this book. The UDL standard I could use is 8.3 fostering collaboration and community by have the students create name jars for each other. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y
RaivionneC Katia what a great book to share! You did a great job aligning this book with your ESOL strategy 5y

This RF Newberry award winning book is great for a LC. A boy names Stanley Yelnats has been cursed with the rest of his family and ends up at the wrong place at the wrong time. Thanks to a pair of stolen sneakers that fell on him, it caused him to go to a camp in substitution for juvenile detention. During his time there he meets a new friend zero and tries to figure out why they are digging holes as well as how to break the curse.

KatiaP ESOL strategy I would use I 1 tech questioning for clarification. There are a lot of plot points to this story so make sure students can question what is happening and how it relates. The UDL standard I would use is 7.1 optimize individual choice and autonomy by allowing students to choose this story for their LC. More on the author at https://www.prhspeakers.com/speaker/louis-sachar. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y
DrSpalding This is a classic Katia! Literature circles would work well for this book. The anagram in the main characters name is a fun topic to discuss with students. 5y

This is an amazing RF Napra Nautilus award winning novel. This is a great IR for the classroom. This is a story of a boy named Cole who beat up a kid terribly because he was a bully. Instead of getting jail time Cole chooses to go to a remote island and do work. He encounters a spirit bear instead of leaving it at peace he attacks it and gets mauled. He learns a lot after he leaves the island early due to injuries and returns with a new heart.

KatiaP ESOL strategy you can use is 16 integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing activities and UDL principle 6.4 enhancing capacity for monitoring progress. You can do these by giving students activities and questions after each chapter. This will help monitor how much they understand. More on the author at https://www.benmikaelsen.com/ 5y
Tabitha_H I actually read this book while I was in HighSchool it was a great book. The author website is a great resource. 5y
DrSpalding I agree with Tabatha that this may be a book for the later middle school or high school grades. Good choice nonetheless! You are consistently using the author website which is truly one of the best places to go to see how you can use their book in your classroom. 5y

This RF caldecott award winning book is PR. Since it is about two strangers who meet and one finds out the other has no friends and decides to make him his friend, it is great to have students make a friend through a partner read. You can also play this song that goes along with the reading of the book: https://youtu.be/SjjR6snoQN8. You can also find more about the author at https://www.simonandschuster.com/authors/Chris-Raschka/1786251

KatiaP The ESOL standard I would use is 6 continually monitor students comprehension. This book has very simple words so it is great for an ESOL student and you can easily stop to check for understanding. The UDL principle I would use is 2.5 illustrate though multiple media by using the song to teach about the book. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y

This is such a great RF book to bring in an Elementary classroom and use as a RA. It is a cute take on don't do to other what you wouldn't want done to yourself. Poor Penelope the dinosaur wants to fit in, but keeps trying to eat the other students. Thanks to the help of the class goldfish she learns her lesson of why you shouldn't eat your classmates. More on the author at https://www.rodeenliterary.com/ryan-t-higgins.

KatiaP The ESOL strategy I would use is 14 simplify my speech by making it slower and redundant. The UDL strategy I would use is 6.1 guide the appropriate goal-setting by talking with the class qnd write down what they wouldn't want someone to do to them and what they may do that upsets someone else. Then at the end we can come up with ways on how to fix them. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y
ShardaeP This sound like an interesting book. It also sounds relatable. There is a time in everybody's lives that they feel like they do not fit in, but they want to. I curious to know how the goldfish helped the dinosaur, so I will put this on my “to read“ list. 5y
DrSpalding You could of course use the author study that you have now experienced. Reading aloud Higgins books is probably the best way to share them. These picture books are meant to be shared with students! 5y

This NF Caldecott award winning book is a great RA for an Elementary classroom. It tells the story of a veterinarian who is off to war to help with the horses and on the way there he buys a young bear from a trader and names it Winnipeg. The after a while he decides to take the bear to the zoo where a young child named Christopher Robin names his stuffed bear based off of miss Winnipeg. This a great story to build text to text connections.

KatiaP The ESOL strategy I would use is 4, linking the lesson to student's prior knowledge as well as UDL 3.1 building on background knowledge by helping students be aware of Winnie the Pooh stories by reading them one or showing them the show or movie. To listen to an interview with the author: https://88cupsoftea.com/lindsaymattick/. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y

Slowly he finds ways to survive while going through a lot of mental hardship. More on the author at https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/authors/23384/gary-paulsen

KatiaP ESOL strategy I would use 2 and 9 teach note-taking strategies and promoting cooperation. Students can come together and share their notes on what was read. UDL principles that can be used are 1.2 offer alternatives for auditory information by using videos or recordings of reading to play for the class during the GR. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y
carolinem I remember reading this book in middle school and my teacher made us write notes on sticky notes! Great summary and resources! 5y

This F book is a great DR for the classroom. A student can play the wolf, another the goose, and the rest of the class can be the chicks. The students would have fun yelling out, " that is not a good idea!". This story about a wolf trying convince a goose to come over and he plots to eat him has a very surprising ending that students would love. More on the author at http://www.mowillems.com/.

KatiaP The UDL standard 3.1 and 3.2 activating background knowledge and highlighting patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. This story can be similar to the 3 little pigs so talk about the patterns of the wolf trying to eat the goose and how the chicks don't want him to. The ESOL standard I would use is 15 reinforce key ideas you present again and again. Talk about the wolf and what he is trying to do over and over. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y

The RF Newberry award winning book is great for an Elementary classroom IR and LC. The story of a gorilla who considers himself an artist talks about his everyday life inside of a circus within a mall. His friends a dog, elephant, and little girl make his cage seem like a domain but within time he realizes it is just a cage. A great conversational piece for students and evokes many emotions. Authors website: https://katherineapplegate.com/

KatiaP The UDL standard 2.1 clarifying vocabulary and syntax is great for this book especially for the harder words that Ivan uses. The ESOL standard I would use is 20 listing the most important words or phrases that you have defined during the UDL 2.1 standard. You can also use ESOL standard 17 providing contextual support by using the images in the book as well as other outside sources. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y
LizzettM I loved this book!!! I like the EL standard that you used, it will benefit them while reading this novel. 5y

This B book would be great to use for spanish heritage month for the classroom. It talks about the life of the Cuban queen of salsa Celia Cruz and how she changed her path of being a teacher and became the wonderful singer she was. It was not an easy path as it never is and has a great theme of if you pursue your dreams and work hard enough they can come true. Great for a SR and presenting to the class when talking about famous people's history.

KatiaP The UDL standards you can use is 7.1 & 7.2 optimizing student autonomy and choice as well as relevance, value, and authenticity by allowing the student pick and share this story with their classmates. The ESOL standards I would use is 4 linking lesson to prior knowledge by relating their knowledge of Spanish heritage and music by showing them a Celia Cruz song. For the authors website : http://www.veronicachambers.com/. #UCFLAE3414SP20 5y

It consists of two stories in one. One a normal girl who wants to know the secrets of where she lives but is confined because of her parents and one who is a replica trying to survive after their building has been burned down. Each story intertwines into one another.

KatiaP Great ESOL strategies to use is 2 and 6 which is to promote cooperation (small groups) and continually monitor student comprehension. This is a bigger book so it is good to have classmates work with each other to build understanding and keeping an eye on where students are at and if they need help is crucial for books like this. A HF book about Kim Há who has to move to America after the Vietnam war had reached her hometown. She ends up in Alabama where she struggles with a bully. KatiaP UDL strategies: Promote understanding across languages (2.4) and develop self-assessment and reflection (9.3).
