Island in the Sea of Time
Island in the Sea of Time | S. M. Stirling
7 posts | 11 read | 5 to read
It's spring on Nantucket and everything is perfectly normal, until a sudden storm blankets the entire island. When the weather clears, the island's inhabitants find that they are no longer in the late twentieth century...but have been transported instead to the Bronze Age! Now they must learn to survive with suspicious, warlike peoples they can barely understand and deal with impending disaster, in the shape of a would-be conqueror from their own time.

4 ⭐️s
I know, 4 stars but still only a so-so?!? I just can‘t quite settle on a solid rating for this. 😅
Maybe once I finish the trilogy I‘ll be able to judge it more completely. It‘s certainly an interesting roller coaster ride through culture clash via time travel. There were a few inaccuracies/liberties taken, but it was written in the 90‘s, so I went in sort of knowing to expect that. Multiple trigger warnings for some, but overall a fun read.

Martha is definitely one of my favorite characters so far. 🤣
The entire island of Nantucket has been transported back to about 1250 BC. No one knows why or how, but the local pastor is convinced Science can‘t explain it, only God, and that there must be a reason for it…
“Mount St. Helens didn‘t blow up because God was mad at the bears.” ❤️

1. LOVE THEM! 😍
2. Not outside of the books, but I have one from the Walking Dead tv show. 🧟‍♀️ 🧟‍♂️
3. My current read. I can‘t believe there‘s not a map, even if it‘s just the island of Nantucket itself! 🤨 A world map or navigation chart would be really fabulous. Luckily I have my World Atlas and Human History Timeline books to reference. 🤓😅

I was intrigued by the premise of Nantucket Island and a fair circumference of the sea around it being transported way into the past but after the set up and the villains emerging it was a little too over the top in some respects. The villains were so evil they had no nuance and so it felt like they had big signs saying I'm Evil Hate Me. I like it better when there's more than one dimension to the bad guys.

#BookReport
Managed to finish two excellent books this week. So all in all a great week of reading.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to finish the tagged and at 600 pages I don't really think I'll get much more finished besides it. When I finish that it's on to my bookspin of Seveneves and I know I won't finish it this week since it's kind of a chunkster.

Started this today because it‘s my #CalibreRoulette pick for April. I was curious as to how the island would get sent back in time and at 50 pages in it‘s a bit hand wavy but I‘m okay with that. I‘m curious to see how this plays out since it‘s a trilogy.

Chrissyreadit I just read the reviews. I love time travel and history but have never heard of the book. 4y
HeyT @Chrissyreadit I only learned about this book because it is on my goodreads book club shelf and I'm trying to read all the books on the shelf. 4y
