Strega Nona (Reprint) | Tomie DePaola
56 posts | 98 read | 9 to read
When Strega Nona leaves him alone with her magic pasta pot, Big Anthony is determined to show the townspeople how it works in this classic Caldecott Honor book from Tomie dePaola. Strega Nona--"Grandma Witch"--is the source for potions, cures, magic, and comfort in her Calabrian town. Her magical everfull pasta pot is especially intriguing to hungry Big Anthony. He is supposed to look after her house and tend her garden but one day, when she goes over the mountain to visit Strega Amelia, Big Anthony recites the magic verse over the pasta pot, with disastrous results. In this retelling of an old tale, author-illustrator Tomie dePaola combines humor in the writing and warmth in the paintings as he builds the story to its hilarious climax.

I loved both of these books. They were both really cute.
In Kitten's First Full Moon, the kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk and tries different ways to get to it.
In Strega Nona, good, honest help is hard to find, especially when you have a magic pot that will instantly make pasta 😸

I love this book! A classic folktale about a witch who leaves town and Big Anthony tries to cast one of her spells! Because he didn‘t watch her all the way, he ends up causing a big mess! Luckily Strega Nona comes back, and all that is damaged is Big Anthony‘s stomach from all the pasta he must eat/clean up!

Strega Nona is a charming TL picture book about a village‘s beloved old “grandmother witch,” her magic pasta pot, and a naughty servant boy whose attempt to use magic goes very wrong! This book, charmingly written and Illustrated by Tomie dePaola, won a Caldecott honor. nquintus This TL book is meant to entertain, as well as to teach a lesson. It would be a fantastic RA story, as it has plenty of opportunity to be read with expression and gestures that would benefit all students in an elementary classroom. As part of an RA strategy, Strega Nona coincides with the UDL guideline 9.3 about the development of self-assessment and reflection. It would also align with ESOL strategy 17. 4y

This F Caldecott winner is a classic that I remember from Elementary school. Strega Nona (which means Grandma Witch) is a woman who uses potions and her “magic touch“ to help the people in her town in Calabria. Big Anthony is Strega Nona's assistant and although he means well, his inability to pay attention gets him into a huge mess. He breaks her one rule and touches the pasta pot, resulting in a gigantic pasta mess that only Strega Nona can fix.

Kyleigh_J This book is perfect for an RA as students might need help understanding the book. This video is a great resource to show after the RA, since it includes pictures and videos of the illustrations as the story is read. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGVXwMX0e5w&vl=en
UDL 2.4 promote understanding across languages is satisfied as this book contains rich Italian culture and traditions. For example, Strega Nona is Italian for Grandma Witch.

In creating this post I discovered that Tomie DePaola has just passed away and the world of children's literature has taken a huge loss. This book is one I remember from my own elementary years and I plan to continue teaching Tomie DePaola's works in my future classrooms. Strega Nona is the first in the series of Strega Nona tales. This is a TL Caldecott winning picture book about an elderly woman named Strega Nona who uses her magic to help

deiacovab all the people in the town. Once she hires a man to help her around the house and he finds a way to use Strega Nona's powers to show off to the town. Unfortunately the man didn't follow all of the steps Strega Nona normally does and causes chaos. I would use this book for RA using this resource for the lesson https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/nicole-kent/bring-magic-your-clas... 4y

The TL PB Strega Nona written and illustrated by Tomie dePaola, a Caldecott winner, is a perfect choice for PR in your PK-5th classes. Strega Nona is a nice, old witch with a love for pasta. She hires a boy named Big Anthony to help her with her chores around her house. Big Anthony observes her singing to the pasta when magically, all of a sudden, she has a large pot of pasta! This PB teaches the consequences of being dishonest. #UCFLAE3414F19

Camrynm The UDL principle I would use would be 1.2: Offer alternatives for auditory information. In the PB, Strega Nona has a special magic chant that the students could listen to or they could make up on their own. Students could also look at pictures of Italy to better understand where Strega Nona lives. The EL strategy I would use would be 17. Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, exc. 4y

Pickpick

A TL RA honor book, Streganona is about an old witch who hires a helper named Anthony. She goes on a trip and tell Anthony not to touch her magic pasta pot. He doesn't listen and almost covers the town in pasta! This book will teach students to listen to rules.

DrSpalding Tomie is a favorite author of mine. This story has an excellent message and is a Caldecott award winner. This also makes for a great storytelling option. 7y
Beths Thanks for sharing, the book looks like a great addition to any classroom library. Sounds like it would really help with teaching children rules. (edited) 6y
