Some Assembly Required
Some Assembly Required: The Not-So-Secret Life of a Transgender Teen | Arin Andrews
Seventeen-year-old Arin Andrews shares all the hilarious, painful, and poignant details of undergoing gender reassignment as a high school student in this winning memoir.Weve all felt uncomfortable in our own skin at some point, and weve all been told that its just a part of growing up. But for Arin Andrews, it wasnt a phase that would pass. He had been born in the body of a girl and there seemed to be no relief in sight In this revolutionary memoir, Arin details the journey that led him to make the life-transforming decision to undergo gender reassignment as a high school junior. In his captivatingly witty, honest voice, Arin reveals the challenges he faced as a girl, the humiliation and anger he felt after getting kicked out of his private school, and all the changesboth mental and physicalhe experienced once his transition began. Arin also writes about the thrill of meeting and dating a young transgender woman named Katie Hilland the heartache that followed after they broke up. Some Assembly Required is a true coming-of-age story about knocking down obstacles and embracing family, friendship, and first love. But more than that, it is a reminder that self-acceptance does not come ready-made with a manual and spare parts. Rather, some assembly is always required.

I think I was expecting this to be a memoir along the lines of Warriors Don‘t Cry by Melba Pattillo Beals (awesome novel, check it out), but this wasn‘t quite as narrative, though some parts were, and more like Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Gram. I was surprised at how in-depth this was. I was not expecting Andrews to reveal his dead name. But it lacked that little something to make it five stars. 4⭐️

Not all of our paths are the same, and yet we all have to live on the same planet together. Be a good human. #tbrpile

How do I always get stuck putting these things together? I don't remember any of my toys growing up needing so many parts or any assembly. #parentproblems #firstworldproblems #thankGodforaudiobooks

Books_Wine_Repeat @398.2 Thanks! It took about 45 minutes to put together, my boys played with it for 10 minutes and then moved onto other toys. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y

Today is a hard day for the LGBT community as we remember and honor the victims and families of the Pulse Orlando shooting. The LGBT community is a community of strength and resilience. We're not going anywhere. Here are the books from my library that feature LGBT protagonists, or are written by LGBT authors. Stay strong and keep fighting always 🌈 #LGBT #pridemonth

Just finished this for the teen book group I'll be covering next week. I liked this memoir of a teen trans man. As I just told my friend - the writing was a little flat in parts, but I really admire Arin for telling his story. Can't wait to hear what the teens think of the book and Arin's experience! Also, I love the title 😊
