A fantastic final read for 2025. Unusually for a novella, I think it was just the right amount of plot for the page count. There are aspects to this science fictional world that I'd love to explore further, side characters I wish we'd spent a bit more time with, but the main arc for the protagonist is satisfying, and still leaves room for things to be weird and wonderful and truly eerie. 1/?

This is a tough read. A novelization of Louis' growing up gay in a poor, bigoted family in a small rural French village. If you have read any of his nonfiction you will see all of his past in these pages and it is hard to see how the family treated each other, knowing it is mostly true. There are some interesting side stories (his cousins arrest and run from law for one) and in general his writing is (as always) heartfelt and gorgeous

I identify as zero chill. This is indeed intrinsic to my sense of self. 😅

Published in 2020.
These times remain unbelievable. 🤨

I‘m stymied by my reaction to this book. As I was reading it, I thought this was a memoir. Once I discovered it was fiction something shifted & I felt duped. If you‘ve ever had a medical event and ended up in the hospital all of this book will be very familiar to you. I feel as if he had to have experienced all of this himself and I wonder why he didn‘t just call it a memoir. Anyway, it‘s very convincing if it truly is fiction. 🤷🏻♀️

The older I get the more I find myself looking back to the great memories from the past. These books were important to me when I read them in the 1980s. Luckily my partner is a hoarder/ collector of books and these were still on her shelf. I think the reread was every thing and more than the first was. Definitely two books that define an important moment in my life.

"I became consumed by worry, as when a realization dawns too late and plunges you into inertia. It was one of those cases where the more time passes, the less able you are to correct your mistake or set right some embarrassing situation, and so it becomes harder and harder to react."
I just love how Louis describes situations we have all experienced.

For the Jan 2026 #BookSpin, I am tackling this list of the oldest memoirs and bios on my Kindle.
Happy Reading and Happy New Year! 🤗❤️🥂
