Pickpick

A fantastic final read for 2025. Unusually for a novella, I think it was just the right amount of plot for the page count. There are aspects to this science fictional world that I'd love to explore further, side characters I wish we'd spent a bit more time with, but the main arc for the protagonist is satisfying, and still leaves room for things to be weird and wonderful and truly eerie. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? For most of this book I would give equal weight to sci-fi and horror, but that last bit definitely leans weird lit fic.
Certain things are resolved, but Porter doesn't make the mistake of trying to wrap everything up regarding what might be termed the larger threat, because the concepts introduced are, I'm gonna say purposefully messy, a reflection of life, and it works all the better for letting it be.

Robotswithpersonality 3/? Touches on themes of transformation, I was honestly surprised transgender identity was not a bigger part of the narrative. There's something about the larger ideas of bodily autonomy in regards to the alien presence that feel like a reflection of modern anxieties around gender identity and expression, the right to choose, the notion that you can't make other people's choices for them, and if they're happy, you love by letting them BE. 8h
Robotswithpersonality 4/? The rumination on immortality, on genetic manipulation, if you take the possibilities of the human body beyond the limits of the current science, how long before the euphoria of freedom becomes the hunger for something even more extreme?
Stagnation in loss, grief, for a way of life, for a loved one, for an old self that resists change, is perhaps the strongest theme for the main character.
8h
Robotswithpersonality 5/5 think between the Compound and the Seep, I had reservations about whether it would be a brittle rebellion or a bitter assimilation, and by the end it was neither and I'm glad.
A strong sense of self even if things don't work out how you planned, a recognition of the process required to acknowledge what you have to let go of.
Good lessons to take into the new year.

The End of Eddy | Edouard Louis

Pickpick

This is a tough read. A novelization of Louis' growing up gay in a poor, bigoted family in a small rural French village. If you have read any of his nonfiction you will see all of his past in these pages and it is hard to see how the family treated each other, knowing it is mostly true. There are some interesting side stories (his cousins arrest and run from law for one) and in general his writing is (as always) heartfelt and gorgeous

Small Rain: A Novel | Garth Greenwell

I‘m stymied by my reaction to this book. As I was reading it, I thought this was a memoir. Once I discovered it was fiction something shifted & I felt duped. If you‘ve ever had a medical event and ended up in the hospital all of this book will be very familiar to you. I feel as if he had to have experienced all of this himself and I wonder why he didn‘t just call it a memoir. Anyway, it‘s very convincing if it truly is fiction. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Crazeedi I've not heard of this book, but I think it may be worth reading, as I worked in the medical field most of my career. It is definitely dysfunctional and needs reform. And I've been in ICU and near death too (in the 90s) but received excellent care at a small rural hospital 22h
AnnCrystal I researched a little and found this statement for you,

“While Small Rain is fiction, the story is inspired by his own serious medical crisis in 2020, using invention and made-up elements to explore themes of illness, art, love while sharing parallels with Greenwell's life. All this is a starting point for a work of fiction, not a direct nonfiction. Greenwell has explicitly stated he needed the freedom of fiction to process such a bewilderment.“

Suet624 @AnnCrystal Thanks for researching this. I tried to figure it out earlier but didn't find this quote. I was planning on watching some of his talks but what you've provided is sufficient. I can understand that 'he needed the freedom of fiction to process' what he went through. 21h
Suet624 @Crazeedi I think you'd find it interesting, for sure. But none of it will surprise you. 21h
AnnCrystal Glad I could help 😉👌🏼📚💝. 21h

The older I get the more I find myself looking back to the great memories from the past. These books were important to me when I read them in the 1980s. Luckily my partner is a hoarder/ collector of books and these were still on her shelf. I think the reread was every thing and more than the first was. Definitely two books that define an important moment in my life.

"I became consumed by worry, as when a realization dawns too late and plunges you into inertia. It was one of those cases where the more time passes, the less able you are to correct your mistake or set right some embarrassing situation, and so it becomes harder and harder to react."

I just love how Louis describes situations we have all experienced.
