"A gripping and beautifully written novel that brings to mind Notes on a Scandal and Elizabeth is Missing. Alice Haywood is born on an orange farm in country New South Wales. She begins playing the piano when she is three, taught by her English mother who is unhappy in Australia and in a desolate, violent marriage. When Alice is seven, her mother, desperate for her daughter to leave if she can't, sends her to boarding school in the bleak north of England, and there Alice stays for the next ten years. Then she's offered a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. That year, on a summer school in Oxford, she meets Edward, an economics professor, who sweeps her off her feet. But underneath his suave demeanor, Edward is a damaged man. He traps her into marriage and Alice is stuck, oppressed by his cruelty, in the Oxford home he has bought for her. After a disastrous recital of Rachmaninoff's Second Concerto, she stops playing and her dreams of becoming a concert pianist evaporate. Alice and Edward have a son, Richard, whom she adores. He too is a talented musician. But as Richard grows up he becomes more and more distant, and ultimately Alice can't

Alice grows up in rural Australia with her mother teaching her piano. She is sent to school in England where she continues her musical education eventually studying at the Royal College of Music. She meets Edward after a concert and so begins the next stage.

This is Alice's story of her past and her present. I really enjoyed the way this was written with the two time lines weaving together. A little long in the middle but overall a great read.

thegreensofa I enjoyed this one too. Great review. (edited) 3y

Mehso-so

I didn't really enjoy this. There wasn't enough substance to the central character to make me care about what happened to her (except in principle because it shouldn't happen to anyone), the husband wasn't fully convincing and the plot was contrived. Also, I don't think the structure worked very well - it felt quite disjointed. Disappointing.

I'll send it back to you next week Lee.

Laying in bed trying to get this one finished by the end of the month for #LMPBC. This is a lovely friend‘s bookcase. We stayed over last night after a #Hotest100 party yesterday. I discovered I quite like a Tom Collins. Perhaps I will be able to do more reading today than I thought as the kids are happily playing in the pool already and they were in it all day yesterday and had to be made to get out to eat and put suncream on @ReadingDownUnder

LeeRHarry Great nails 😊 looking forward to reading your thoughts! 4y

Never before have I felt so suffocated reading a book. That makes it sound terrible, it‘s not. This tale of a terrible, abusive marriage is so immersive I, too felt trapped in this relationship, crushing the very soul of Alice as you read. Morrison writes with such understanding and compassion. I don‘t know why it too me so long to get to this one.

It‘s taken me a very long time to actually listen to this audio. I‘ve borrowed it multiple time before now and let it expire before I got to it. I‘m kicking myself now, it‘s great!!

A beautiful debut, absorbing - I finished this in two days. Intelligently written, a woman who we follow from rural Australian youth to Oxford, then to old age and her will to go on. Her bad marriage is hard to read but so sympathetically written and much is left unsaid. Subtle, and infused with music. Zoe Morrison is a pianist and her knowledge & love of music adds depth to the story. Brava! ðŸ‘ðŸ¼

There is nothing better than the anticipation of reading the first line of a book. It's still a mystery and the possibilities are endless.
