The heartbreaking, yet hopeful, story of a mother and daughter struggling to be a family without the one person who holds them together--a perfect summer read for fans of JoJo Moyes and Marisa de los Santos. Alexis Gold knows how to put the "work" in working mom. It's the "mom" part that she's been struggling with lately. Since opening her own advertising agency three years ago, Alexis has all but given up on finding a good work/life balance. Instead, she's handed over the household reins to her supportive, loving partner, Tommy. While he's quick to say they divide and conquer, Alexis knows that Tommy does most of the heavy lifting--especially when it comes to their teenage daughter, CeCe. Their world changes in an instant when Tommy receives a terminal cancer diagnosis, and Alexis realizes everything she's worked relentlessly for doesn't matter without him. So Alexis does what Tommy has done for her almost every day since they were twelve-year-old kids in Destin, Florida--she puts him first. And when the only thing Tommy wants is to spend one last summer together at "their" beach, she puts her career on hold to make it happen...even if it means putting her family within striking distance of Tommy's ex, an actress CeCe idolizes. But Alexis and Tommy aren't the only ones whose lives have been turned inside out. In addition to dealing with the normal ups and downs that come with being a teenager, CeCe is also forced to confront her feelings about Tommy's illness--and what will happen when the one person who's always been there for her is gone. When the magic of first love brings a bright spot to her summer, CeCe is determined not to let her mother ruin that for her, too. As CeCe's behavior becomes more rebellious, Alexis realizes the only thing harder for her than losing Tommy will be convincing CeCe to give her one more chance. You and Me and Us is a beautifully written novel that examines the unexpected ways loss teaches us how to love.

#ConflictedWorlds

This book is about the #death of a beloved father & husband from terminal cancer, but even more about the fractured relationship between the wife & teenage daughter he will be leaving behind. I teared up frequently & *may* have had at least one ugly cry when I reviewed it last year. 😥😢😭😓

Eggs I lived this 💔😢 3y

#Two4Tuesday Thank you for the tag @AnotherMissBennet for the tag.🤗Sorry I‘m a day late. Crazy week!

1️⃣ The Bookish Life of Nina Hill is light & funny & fun so far. Also anything by Molly Harper. I like snark.😆

2️⃣ I have been trying to avoid sad books lately but the tagged book snuck in & made me tear up & even ugly cry. It‘s very good.😓😥😰😢😭

Since I‘m so late, I won‘t take but anyone who hasn‘t played yet can join in! 🤗

I really enjoyed this story. It was told from the points of view of Alexis, the mother, and Cece, the teenage daughter. The family has come together for one last summer at their beach house after Tommy the father is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Alexis is a working mom while Tommy holds down the fort at home. Now they all have to deal with Tommy‘s illness and eventual death and try to be there for each other in ways they never have before.

If you want a good cry, you‘ll want to read this story of a family faced with losing their father/partner and the final summer they spend together as they move inexorably toward an ending that is never in doubt. Mother and daughter have to relearn a relationship with each other in the face of mounting grief. Full review at https://booknaround.blogspot.com/2020/04/review-you-and-me-and-us-by-alison.html

I knew this would be emotional going into it and gosh, it was. Told in alternating POV‘s from Alexis and her daughter CeCe, this is the story of their relationship and how it changed over time after husband/father Tommy‘s cancer diagnosis. This is a good example of making the most of an awful situation and also making every moment memorable. I especially loved young CeCe‘s love of food and cooking, and how it was a coping mechanism for her.

Had I not picked this book well before the stresses of the Coronavirus, I likely would not have read it as I am finding sad books difficult now but I ended up happy I did. Beautifully written story with relatable characters that did make me tear up & even have a cathartic ugly cry, but also had me smiling. Although mainly about a mother & daughter struggling to connect when the husband/father gets a terminal cancer diagnosis, it is heartfelt & ...

DebinHawaii ...hopeful. Paired with a refreshing Basil Arnold Palmer inspired by teenage CeCe‘s elevation of this beverage classic for her mom. My full review & recipe are on the blog: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2020/04/the-book-tour-stops-here-review-of-yo... 4y
RenePenn I am also sticking with lighter subject matter right now. I can‘t seem to stay focused on anything too heavy or that requires a lot of concentration. 4y
mdemanatee That Arnold Palmer looks absolutely delightful. 4y

From earlier today. I‘m finally working more from home & ran out at lunch to get a prescription & stop by the grocery store & so I did curbside pickup of my favorite spicy avocado toast because it‘s been way too long.🥑🍞😋Trying to start this one for a book tour review next week but I‘m struggling with it being a tearjerker & not quite what I need right now. I plan to switch back & forth with a happier book if necessary to keep my spirits up.

julesG How I miss the avocado toast pictures. Hope you enjoyed it. 4y
squirrelbrain What @julesG said! If we‘re missing the pictures you must *really* be missing the actual toast! 4y
