The New One
The New One: Painfully True Stories from a Reluctant Dad | Mike Birbiglia
14 posts | 10 read | 1 to read
With laugh-out-loud observations on the rollercoaster ride that is being a new parent, New York Times bestselling author and award-winning comedian Mike Birbiglia delivers a book that is perfect for anyone who has ever raised a child, been a child, or refuses to stop acting like a child. In 2016 comedian Mike Birbiglia and poet Jennifer Hope Stein took their fourteen-month-old daughter Oona to the Nantucket Film Festival. When the festival director picked them up at the airport she asked Mike if he would perform at the storytelling night. She said, "The theme of the stories is jealousy." Jen quipped, "You're jealous of Oona. You should talk about that." And so Mike began sharing some of his darkest and funniest thoughts about the decision to have a child. Jen and Mike revealed to each other their sides of what had gone down during Jen's pregnancy and that first year with their child. Over the next couple years, these stories evolved into a Broadway show, and the more Mike performed it the more he heard how it resonated-not just with parents but also people who resist all kinds of change. So he pored over his journals, dug deeper, and created this book: The New One: Painfully True Stories From a Reluctant Dad. Along with hilarious and poignant stories he has never shared before, these pages are sprinkled with poetry Jen wrote as she navigated the same rocky shores of new parenthood. So here it is. This book is an experiment. Sort of like a family.

First time reading Birbiglia. His narrative is about becoming a dad, with occasional poetic interludes from Jen, his wife. It is touching at times, and often laugh-out-loud funny. They married but didn‘t want children. Until they changed their minds 🤗

I‘ve enjoyed his stand up specials before, so thought I‘d try this short audio. While still very funny in parts, it‘s also taking a serious look at his life as a father, when he really did not ever plan to be a father. He and his wife married agreeing in this, then she changed her mind. It‘s well written, and his wife‘s poems are interspersed between the essays.

A quick and unflinchingly honest read. At times, this book felt a bit scattered and unfocused, but The New One is still a moving read. I didn‘t expect for this book to resound with me as much as it did considering I am not a parent. Would recommend (especially for Birbiglia fans).

#BoutOfBooks starts today! Are you participating? Have you made a TBR?

It‘s taking me so long to get through Midnight Sun that it‘s basically my whole TBR. I‘m hoping the Readathon will give me the motivation to finish it this week. I just started The New One on audiobook this morning.

I laughed. A lot. I cried, a smidge. I saw Birbiglia at Berkeley Rep many years ago. Some of that show is in this book, and I laughed at all of it again. Jokes, great storytelling, and all the feels.

Almost finished my book and going to join #MooMoo for a quick nap. You'd think I would get a good night's rest before a #24hourreadathon and you would be using the sense I wish I had yesterday.

4/5

This is a collection of stories about Mike's experiences from the decision to become parents through his daughter's infancy. It's funny, but it also feels very honest. Mike talks about the difficult parts of becoming a parents.

It's also interspersed with his wife's poetry, which is very good and shows her experiences. I really liked the poems hello?, FISH DOCTOR PLAY, and little astronaut.

It comes out on May 5
