As a kid I used to read cookbooks and imagine making a banquet with every recipe in the cookbook. There was a Disney brand cookbook I especially liked.

This is like that. A reading cookbook, not a practical cookbook. Came out in England after WW2 rationing, and dramatically changed English cooking.

Weaponxgirl I love her writing! I read her biography and she was a bit wilder than her writing ever lets on. 6y

This from a recipe for boar. Mashed potatoes have no cachet darling 😌

She has a habit of using wineglasses and coffee cups as measurements too 🍷

Bklover I love the idea of a nonassertive vegetable! 8y
Texreader Your quotes are killing me. Keep em coming! 😂😂😂 8y
Hooked_on_books I love that she thinks chestnuts and lentils are vegetables. 8y

Texreader @Bklover Particularly a nonassertive vegetable with cachet. 😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 8y
Texreader @Hooked_on_books Again, this is killing me! Chestnuts. I guess I need to add those to my list of side dishes. That have cachet. 8y
Zelma I never would have considered mashed potatoes assertive. Asparagus, yes. Beets, very. I'll even give you rutabaga. Not potatoes. 8y
Marchpane @Zelma I agree, I think she is saying spuds are non-assertive but lacking the necessary 'cachet'. Such a common vegetable 😉 8y
Zelma @Marchpane 😂 I originally said they were pedestrian in my comment before changing it. It felt too mean since I do love potatoes! 8y
Marchpane @Zelma after all this I'm really craving some mash! If that makes me one of the hoi polloi then I'm fine with that 😄 8y
Laura317 Obviously, she has never had a potato launcher as a kid. Those things pack a punch. What? Every kid didn't have one? 8y
Marchpane @Laura317 now that's assertive! 😂😂 8y
saresmoore This book is wonderful! 8y
Marchpane @saresmoore it is! I'm looking forward to reading more books by her. 8y

#wishicouldbethere , eating my way across the Mediterranean, good wine and simple rustic meals.

Has anyone else read this book? Strictly speaking it's a cookbook (from 1950) but it is such an entertaining read in its own right. I'm no foodie, but I'm loving it.

#booktober

ScrappyMags Totally looks up my alley! 8y
RealLifeReading Haven't read this yet but Elizabeth David is fantastic 8y
EnidBiteEm No. Sadly. It looks great, but the only 1950s books I've read about food are Enid Blytons. They had some amazing picnics and midnight feasts, but only ginger beer instead of wine 🍷😢 8y
erzascarletbookgasm Have not read this but I love the setting. Love books set in the Mediterranean. 8y
