Hurrah for Gin: Reluctant Adult
Hurrah for Gin: Reluctant Adult: A book for the perpetually overwhelmed | Katie Kirby
12 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
Perpetually overwhelmed? Welcome to the new book from Katie Kirby, creator of the bestselling Hurrah for Gin Do you overthink everything? Do you struggle to say no to people? Are you paying membership for a gym you never go to? Do group chat politics make you want to throw your phone under a bus? Are you overjoyed when people cancel plans so that you can sit at home in your pyjama bottoms eating Coco pops for dinner? If so then this book is for you! We spend our childhoods wanting to a be adults and, when we get there, find ourselves lost under a pile of life admin, half completed to do lists and anti-ageing face creams that promise to make you look as good as Natalie Imbruglia. In her new book, Hurrah for Gin pinpoints with painful precision just how overwhelming life can be when you're all grown up. From the worry spiral that keeps you up at 3AM, to maintaining a professional aura when you can't stand other people - this is for everyone struggling to stay afloat. Honest, relatable, funny and containing no useful advice whatsoever, take comfort in the knowledge that it's not just you, we're all as f*cked as each other.

Absolutely loved this , every parent needs one of these on their shelf . Great as a little pick me up every so often and nice to know it‘s not just you !
Hilarious , tongue in cheek , sarcastic alternative guide to parenting . It is aimed at parents with younger children but I remember these days too well and even still going through the dinner struggles and the ‘nighttime fu#kwittery !‘

An honest look at parenting and the fun and trials that go with it.

This was so real and hilarious. I could relate to so much in this book. I loved the stick drawings that accompany the book. It touches on every aspect of parenting in the early years. I loved every page and of course biscuits are the key to parenting. A must read for all parents.

LibrarianJen Stacked! The older kid on the cover is so #Zeek and I do love Gin! 5y

And here are my book Christmas presents. I'm going to have to give you some cover shots for a couple of the books.
Also... I feel like a bottle of gin should have been thrown in with the Katie Kirby books. 😂

PurpleyPumpkin Wow, you got some doorstoppers there! Looks like you‘re starting your 2018 reading year right. 😉 7y
Leniverse @PurpleyPumpkin Actually I'm starting 2018 with Ulysses. 😂 And then I'll follow up with Infinite Jest. 🤣 The two books on top of the pile there are mainly stick figure comics and humorous anecdotes about (failing) parenting, so they will make for nice light reading. 7y
PurpleyPumpkin Excellent choices, although heavy reading. I‘m not sure what I‘m starting 2018 with yet. I think I became a bit overwhelmed with all the reading challenges I tried to get through in 2017. I feel like I just want to ramble along and pick whatever appeals to me at a given time. It hasn‘t stopped me from still wanting to do ALL the challenges next year, though! 😅 7y

Leniverse @PurpleyPumpkin Same here. 😂 But Ulysses won the first quarter long read nominations in one of my Goodreads groups, so I have to take the opportunity to read it with a support group! 7y
PurpleyPumpkin Funny you should mention reading Ulysses with a group as I was thinking it would be helpful to read/study it with others. A number of years ago when visiting Ireland, I came across a book that was a reader‘s companion to Ulysses. That I didn‘t buy it is a big regret. I haven‘t been able to find it again! Anyway, I‘ll be interested to read your updates about this one. 7y
Leniverse @PurpleyPumpkin If you want to join in the group is on Goodreads and called "Catching up on Classics - and lots more". 7y
PurpleyPumpkin I‘ll take a look, thanks. And have fun!!👍🏽 7y

For today's #readjanuary prompt of "Recommended by..." here's a book I would never have picked up without a recommendation. One of my parent friends on LibraryThing read this and thought it was hilarious. I liked the title and requested it when my library (surprisingly) ordered it. I am not a parent and have no wish to be one, but I can still be amused. ?

This book was brilliant! So so so funny, the stickman illustrations had me crying with laughter! Kirby is spot on in her tales of regular family life where kids can be super annoying but ultimately you love them fiercely. A great read.

I read one of these stories recently which made fun of Topsy and Tim, a children's show, and the story had me crying with laughter, so if the rest of the book is that good, I'll enjoy this!!
