Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse! 🐀 This MF, RA, Caldecott Honor book is cute story that teaches us forms of jealously and also the meaning of friendship. We meet Alexander, a small house mouse who doesn‘t like being a mouse. He meets a wind-up mouse named Willy in the house one day while exploring and decides he‘d be happier as a toy mouse. In the end, Alexander makes an important decision that helps his friend Willy.

acassatta The UDL principle 3.2- highlight patterns, critical, features, big ideas, and relationships, can teach our students about the importance of friendship as we evaluate our mice friends Alexander and Willy. In addition, for any ESOL students strategy #36- ask numerous questions that require higher level thinking is a great great to ensure they are understanding the material being taught through the RA. #ucflae3414sp21 4y

Vanvlieta I love that you chose UDL 3.2. I think is would be a great principle to tie into the reading. It allows students to comprehend what is going on in the story in regards to the relationships, but also tie it into their own life. Love it!❤️👍🏼 4y
PatriciaS I think 🤔 it's very important to teach our students lessons in friendships and morality and this sounds like a great choice for that. Thank you for your wonderful review 4y

This TL Caldecott Honor picture book was my introduction to Leo Lionni. This book uses beautiful collage illustrations and teaches a meaningful lesson at the end. I would like to use this book for RA. Alexander is a mouse that becomes friends with Willy, a beloved wind-up toy mouse. Alexander wants his life to be like Willy's until he sees that Willy is about to be thrown away...UDL principle 9.3 Develop self-assessment and reflection would be

deiacovab perfect for this book as it gives a great lesson in perspective. I chose ESOL strategy 11 to place language in meaningful context. I chose my resource because it contains a few classroom activities that can be done after reading this book https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/alexander-and-... . #ucflae3414sp20 5y
DrSpalding This is a classic Brittany. He is one of my favorites. These stories provide lessons that children need to hear. Great resource and alignment to appropriate principles and strategies. 5y

Looking for a great F book that teaches the importance of friendship? “Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse” is a beautiful story written and illustrated by Caldecott Honor author Leo Lionni. Willie the mouse becomes jealous when a new “mouse” arrives that looks just like him! Willie must overcome his hard feelings in this heartwarming tale! #LAE3414sp19

I think this book would be great for explaining texture and how that can be portrayed in illustrations. I also can see it tying in with a lesson plan on selfless behavior and in some cases, putting your friends/family before yourself in an effort to help them.

I guess I didn‘t really see the uniqueness of this book. I do however think it‘s really interesting to read a children‘s book that is older than I am. The plot is ultimately that the two mice are jealous of each others lives (one living and one having the child‘s attention). The living mouse gets to choose who to change, himself or his friend mouse.
