Gaston! 🦴 This MF, RA book is another story with a great meaning behind it. This book has an overall theme of family differences and acceptance. The story is about a dog named Gaston who looks a little different then the rest of his dog family. One day at the park he switches families with one that looked like him. In the end, it just didn‘t feel right for Gaston. Despite their differences, he knew he belonged with the family he grew up with.

The Cool Bean! 😎 This MF, RA book has a wonderful message that should be introduced to young students. The book is about a bean who wants to be cool like the “cool beans”. To the little beans surprise, the “cool beans” were actually really nice and helpful! They were kind to him when he needed it most! The overall theme of this book is not to judge someone based off how they look. In addition it is actually really ‘cool‘ to be kind to everyone.

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly! 👵🏻 This TL, S, Caldecott Honor Book, is a classic story that has various retellings too. This version tells the story of an old lady who swallows a fly and continues on a path of swallowing various animals to get the fly out. The moral of the story is “never swallow a horse”. The Girl Who Drank The Moon!🧙🏻‍♀️ This MF, LC Newberry Medal book was a really great read. The story is about the protectorate and their yearly offering to the witch who lives in the woods. One year, the witch feeds the baby moonlight making the baby magical just like the witch. This meant the witch had to take the baby in as her own. She names her Luna. Throughout the book we learn about secrets, Luna‘s magic, and various other magical things.

Officer Buckle and Gloria! 🐕This MF, RA, Caldecott Medal book is a super fun story that teaches the importance of friendship. Our main character, Officer Buckle, is great at his job and knowledgeable too, but had a hard time getting students to listen to his safety tips! Gloria is new to Napville‘s police department and is great at obeying commands. Quickly the officer and the dog befriend each other but have a couple ups and downs along the way.

acassatta In the end, the two characters realize how important they are to each other. I SURVIVED the shark attacks of 1916! 🦈 This HF, IR, New York Times bestselling series book is a riveting take on the historical aspects of the shark attacks that took place in 1916. We learn about Chet, the main character who just moved to New Jersey to live with his Uncle Jerry. In the mix of meeting new friends and familiarizing himself with his new life, they learn of shark attacks happening around New Jersey!

acassatta Life gets pretty extreme for Chet and his friends. This book teaches us about trusting your instincts and the meaning of friendship. With this being a book for grades above the primary, we can see UDL principle 2.1-clarify vocabulary and symbols as well as 3.2-highlight patterns and big ideas. In addition, our ESOL strategy #30-encourage the use of diagrams and drawings to identify concepts is a great option for ESOL students for comprehension. 4y

Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse! 🐀 This MF, RA, Caldecott Honor book is cute story that teaches us forms of jealously and also the meaning of friendship. We meet Alexander, a small house mouse who doesn‘t like being a mouse. He meets a wind-up mouse named Willy in the house one day while exploring and decides he‘d be happier as a toy mouse. In the end, Alexander makes an important decision that helps his friend Willy.

Last Stop on Market Street! 🚌 This RF, RA, Newberry Medal Winner is a great add to an elementary classroom. This book encompasses the idea that beauty can be found in unlikely places. The book takes us on CJ‘s journey with his Nana starting at the church up until they make it to the soup kitchen. CJ seems to question a lot of things and his grandma helps him find the beauty in even the smallest things.

Although this story is fiction, it holds a lot of truth for some families which makes it very relevant. In addition, there is a great lesson behind this story. AlexRobinson A great ESOL book yes!! And the UDL you chose was perfect- some of my favorite UDLS are the ones that represent value and authenticity- because as much fun as it is to read the silly books we also need to see the representation in our books/classroom as well! 4y
Vanvlieta ESOL strategy #17 is always my go to strategy. This is crucial for our students to understand the tone and delivery of whats being read. Plus, gestures and facials add to engagement for a much more enticing read aloud! 🙌🏼 4y

Moon‘s First Friends!🌚 This SF, RA book is a perfect science option for primary grades. The book is a fictional story about the moon and her desperation for visitors! Throughout the book, we learn about various historical scientific events, the main one being the first landing on the moon. The story puts everything in simpler terms for children.

DrSpalding Sad but true I just saw that Michael Collins one of the astronauts that went to the moon in 1969, passed away today. The tribute to him was very touching! While this book is fictitious it is a valuable book for teaching science content. I could see this being paired with a nonfiction text about the lunar landing. 4y

Click, Clack, Moo! 🐄 This MF, RA, Caldecott Honor story is such a great read for any classroom of young learners. This story is about a group of cows on a farm who got ahold of a typewriter. Farmer Brown is not thrilled about this and in turn make a deal with the cows. This story reinforces the importance of problem solving teaching students that situations can be resolved with compromise. #ucflae3414sp21

With all of the talk about strikes and compromise, I am sure you can tell why. This used to be a read aloud book choice however… The folks in TeachLivE got very tired of hearing the story because everyone picked it! Pandas🐼 This NF, IR is a great classroom resource for students to learn accurate information about pandas. The book discusses facts like; most pandas are located in China, they eat primarily bamboo (20-40 pounds a day), there are only about 1600 pandas left in the wild and many more interesting panda bear and red panda facts. While this book doesn‘t hold a theme, it provides educational information in an easy-read form perfect for the classroom.

acassatta The UDL principles that align best are 3.1, activate background knowledge and 7.1, optimize individual choice. With an IR strategy book, students are able to choose a both they find interest in and this can benefit a student for future biological lessons (background knowledge). In Melissa Blackwell Burke‘s retold classic story, we learn about Rapunzel, her long golden hair, the evil witch, and the prince who ultimately saves and falls in love with Rapunzel. Through the story we learn about the dangers of greed and the beauty of ‘true love‘. #ucflae3414sp21

The UDL principle that best corresponds with this piece is 2.1 clarify vocabulary and symbols. The ESOL strategy #20 which is “listing most important words in a presentation” is the best fit for this story. 4y

The Three Little Pigs!🐷This TL, S piece is a must-have in the classroom. Through Patricia Seibert‘s retelling of The Three Little Pigs, we travel through the classic story PCs the three pigs, their three homes, and the big bad Wolf. In the end, we learn that putting time and effort into anything pays off. The UDL principles I see that fit are 1.3- offer alternatives for visual information and 2.5- illustrating through multiple media.

acassatta Because I see this book is best as a storytelling piece, the class would see various forms of visuals through puppets of the three pigs and their experiences in the book. I was drawn to this book because the cover was super appealing. I love the use of orange as the only form of color in this story-super unique. Of course the little bunny on the front cover is super cute too! I know a kindergarten student would be super interested in hearing this story! :)
