New book borrowed from kindle unlimited

I finished this on Sunday but it was a week & I‘m just now reviewing it. I still like The Overdue Life of Amy Byler better but ended up enjoying this book-the characters grew on me as the book did. It made me laugh & made me tear up a few times (there‘s some sad moments involving attempted suicide & grief). I liked the narrators, they did a great job with the voices & it was interesting to see the behind-the-scenes of social media & influencers.

Finishing up today‘s #audiosouping listen. I have about an hour left & I‘m invested. Today‘s soup is a Giada recipe—a lentil & pasta soup that now that it is bubbling away with the broth it, smells pretty incredible. Since today is cloudy & cooler than normal, I think it will totally hit the spot. Finished soup pics coming later.

This week‘s #audiosouping pick again. It‘s a good listen so far although I‘m still liking the author‘s first book better. Today‘s soup is Donna Hay‘s Creamy Potato & Sauerkraut Soup which sounded interesting & smells delicious. Finished soup pics with the topping (always my favorite part) coming later. 😋🥣

My #audiosouping pick this week. I really liked The Overdue Life of Amy Byler & I don‘t know that I‘ll like this one as much but giving it a shot.

This is the beginnings of a Middle Eastern-ish Minestrone Soup that will have tomatoes, chickpeas, & Israeli couscous added to the veggies. Trying out a new spice blend for #BlendsBash2020 so kitchen experiments. Finished soup pic coming later.

Mia Bell has amassed a following that pays her to sell good vibes and unattainable happiness. But days before she‘s to get married, her fiancé breaks up with her, leaving Mia‘s world, both virtual and literally crashing down. At the same time, a follower makes a comment, suggesting self harm-alerting her estranged sister. Through a series of self discovery and missteps, their lives intersect. Along the way each learns what their happiness is.

After reading (and loving) The Overdue Life of Amy Byler, I‘m so excited to start this one!

I really wanted to enjoy this book but had a hard time getting through it... I actually put it down and read a different book and then came back to it and finished. The storyline of a social influence getting rid of her phone was a good one and the suicide storylines mixed in were also interesting but overall it was slow and just not great.

Kelly Harms's The Bright Side of Going Dark is a humorous, insightful, and at times uncomfortable consideration of the perils (and, sometimes, benefits) of social media. I alternated via WhisperSync (thanks, Kindle Unlimited!) between audio and ebook for this one and enjoyed it immensely.⠀

Harms's novel (she's the author of The Overdue Life of Amy Byler, which I loved) switches between the perspectives of two characters. ⬇️

OK, I feel like we are on a trend for books about social media, which totally makes sense given the years it takes to publish these novels. This is at least the 4th one I have read in 2020. Unfortunately, they seem to be getting rated lower and lower as they are released. This book is boring and I just do not care about the two protagonists of this story.
