Mehso-so

Too uneven to be really successful and not enough historical context or detail to tie the several stories together. More about the eruption and how it affected the other events would have created a coherent narrative out of a group of disparate stories that had the year as the only explicit connection. I'd be really interested in reading NF book of the same name though. 👇 #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

Moray_Reads Focusing on Henry, Sarah and Hope Peter might have been better, perhaps with sections by an omniscient narrator to explain the impact of the eruption on each of the stories. As much as it pains me to say, it wasn't clear where Mary Shelley's story for in, except that it happened in 1816 4y

Pickpick

I got the pre-publication copy of this book at a proof party last year. It presents the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815 & its devastating effects on world climate in the following year, through the stories of 6 individuals, some entirely fictitious, & some based on real people. All the stories are engaging & sympathetic, and the book shows how just a small change in climate can have huge & terrible effects. A really good, & pertinent, read! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was rather disappointing. The premise sounded great - about the worldwide effects of a huge volcanic eruption in 1815. However, the reality is that this is a collection of 6 stories about individuals (including Mary Shelley and Constable) but with no connection at all between them.

@jenniferw88 - whilst this isn‘t a #regency style book I *think* it‘s set in the #regency period so can I use it for #jennyis30?

Hooked_on_books That‘s a bummer. Terrific premise, for sure. I hate it when that happens. 5y
jenniferw88 @squirrelbrain definitely - you're right in the middle of the period! 😊😘 5y
squirrelbrain I know @Hooked_on_books - so annoying. There was hardly anything about the actual volcano, and it was a very depressing book as well. I guess that‘s what it was meant to be, but still..... not at all what I expected! 5y
squirrelbrain Yay @jenniferw88 - I thought I had the dates right but just wanted to check! 👍😁 5y
