I loved this #middlegrade book! It delves into middle school friendships, bullies, and racism on a tween level without dumbing anything down.
New book in the library and I started reading it with a class and I‘m hooked. #diversecharacters #california #surfers #friendship #skinfolk
I‘m pretty excited for the next one up. I really enjoyed her first book. Have you read her work?
What a great MG book about friendship, family, finding out who you are and a mystery thrown into the mix. Alberta is the only black girl in town until Edie moves into the B&B on her street. They become fast friend but one day they are in Edie‘s room and they found journals written by a young lady who has a painful secret. The two work together to found out who the lady was and uncover her past!
Such a beautiful MG story about growing up, friendship, family, and a bit of mystery. I really enjoyed the story because even though the title suggests it‘s about being the only black girls, it is so much more than that. Both girls find hidden journals in the attic of the old B&B in town. They are uncovering the details of a story from the 1950s.
Oh gosh, I don't read as much middle grade because being thirteen is the worst. But this story of navigating a new neighbor who makes you not the only Black kid in your grade, a long time bestie who seems to be pulling away, and some old journals that seem to contain a secret, captured the essence of being thirteen.
When i was in high school I moved to a really small town. They sucked. And what that community did when a Black family moved in should have been criminal. They didn't stay very long. Hopefully this book has a happier ending then that town 20 years ago.
