Believe Me: How Trusting Women Can Change the World | Jessica Valenti, Jaclyn Friedman
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
What would happen if we believed women? A groundbreaking anthology offers a potent rallying cry and theory of change Harvey Weinstein. Brett Kavanaugh. Jeffrey Epstein. Donald Trump. The most infamous abusers in modern American history are being outed as women speak up to publicly expose behavior that was previously only whispered about -- and it's both making an impact, and sparking a backlash. From the leading, agenda-setting feminist editors of Yes Means Yes, Believe Me brings readers into the evolving landscape of the movement against sexual violence, and outlines how trusting women is the critical foundation for future progress. In Believe Me, contributors ask and answer the crucial question: What would happen if we didn't just believe women, but acted as though they matter? If we take women's experiences of online harassment seriously, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain, we will save countless lives. With contributions from many of the most important voices in feminism today, Believe Me is an essential roadmap for the #MeToo era and beyond.

A little light bedtime reading. Some really good reflections on a variety of topics here.

lynneamch From not believing assault survivors to taking away reproductive freedom, it's all a part of misogynistic attempts to wrest control in every aspect of women's lives. Feeling hopeful for change. 2w
Augustdana @lynneamch 💕💕we‘ve gotta stay hopeful though it feels hopeless 1w
lynneamch Thank you for that. Someone said to at least keep hope in your back pocket so it will be ready to use again soon. 1w

A powerful and diverse collection of essays exploring women's agency and autonomy in relation to work, sexual violence and how hard it can be to be believed.

Although I cannot relate to every single essay, I felt deeply connected to all of them and my heart goes out to every single women who has been silenced or disbelieved.

I loved this book so much!!! The diversity of essays is astounding. Many of the essays truly taught me new perspectives on a variety of issues, such as domestic violence, growing up in a poor minority household, etc.. I would consider this book necessary to anyone who wants to understand how it is to live as a woman in a variety of cultures.

“It would be nice to think that power belongs to some far-away caste of supervillains, up above our heads, which we can demolish without any complicated feelings. But not every oppressor is Jeff Bezos, and not every oppressor has to be; opposing power also means confronting ourselves and our friends.” Sady Doyle
