November 1917. William Moreland is in mid-flight. After nearly twenty years, the notorious thief, known as the Ridgerunner, has returned. Moving through the Rocky Mountains and across the border to Montana, the solitary drifter, impoverished in means and aged beyond his years, is also a widower and a father. And he is determined to steal enough money to secure his son's future. Twelve-year-old Jack Boulton, born in the woods to two outlaws, now finds himself semi-orphaned and left in the care of Sister Beatrice, a formidable nun of the Anglican Order of Saint Mara. In the town of Banff, Alberta, where tourists, new immigrants, and POWs dwell among the locals, she lays claim to the boy and keeps him in cloistered seclusion in her grand old home. The boy longs to return to his family's cabin, deep in the Sawback Range. His father is coming for him. The nun won't let him go. Set against the backdrop of a distant war raging in Europe and a rapidly changing landscape in the West, Gil Adamson's follow-up to her award-winning debut The Outlander is a vivid historical novel that draws from the epic tradition and a literary Western brimming with a cast of unforgettable characters touched with humour and loss and steeped in the wild of the natural world.

Lots of geeky writerly talk in this Toronto festival conversation between Randy Boyagoda and Gil Adamson. Very satisfying to listen to. BTW, many events are recorded and available for later viewing, if you are interested. Next up this evening: Annabel Lyon at Starfest. 😊

Of the novels shortlisted for the Giller Prize, this is my favourite. Literary, lush, evocative of time, place and character I enjoyed this one the most. I know that's not what necessarily piques the judges' choice, but for me it definitely does!

@Lindy

Lindy I agree with you about the lushness and readability. But what was your takeaway? By the time I got to the reveal of the crazed murdering nun, I was rolling my eyes. Then, by the end, I wondered if Adamson just wanted a happy ending. 4y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy 🙂🙂 I liked the parts with the nun! Some parts yes, out there, but I liked it! It's been an interesting ride with this shortlist for sure! 4y
Lindy @Penny_LiteraryHoarders I‘m rereading The Glass Hotel and I love it even more than I did the first time. 😊 4y

I‘m sorry to say I‘m going to have to call it on my #DoubleSpin. Interesting premise, but I am just not feeling the writing style, so it‘s a DNF, at least for now. Perhaps it‘s a timing thing and it will come out of #hibernation when the time is right.

Remind me @TheAromaofBooks do DNF‘s still count towards a #BookSpinBingo?

Also I‘m now on the lookout for another #Alberta book for #ReadCanada if anyone has a recommendation.

rabbitprincess Yes, DNFs count 😊 4y
MsMelissa This is my choice for Alberta 4y

KVanRead @Book_Fiend_Melissa Thanks so much!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Yes DNFs count!! The goal is to get books off the list, so a bail works for me!! 4y
KVanRead @TheAromaofBooks Perfect. Works for me, too! 😊 Thanks! 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira Tag book is what I‘m planning to read for #Alberta 4y

Set in the mountains around Banff, Alberta, this literary historical novel has the propulsion and atmosphere of a western. My full review and Giller prediction is here: https://lindypratch.blogspot.com/2020/08/ridgerunner-by-gil-adamson.html?m=1 #shadowgiller #canlit #CanadianAuthour

LeahBergen I‘m really looking forward to this one. It‘s a sequel of sorts to The Outlander, isn‘t it? 4y
Lindy @LeahBergen Yes, although you don‘t have to have read the first one. It starts 14 years later, with Mary‘s death. 4y

How beautiful to watch weather work at a distance, without the slightest need to decide what that weather would mean to you. Rain, snow, lightning, it was happening to someone else.

Jennick2004 Oh my gracious is that gorgeous!!! 4y
SamAnne Beautiful! 4y
Lindy @Jennick2004 @SamAnne Seeing weather across distance is something I sometimes take for granted about living on the northern edge of the prairies. It‘s good to be reminded of the awesome beauty. 4y

But a small town is a living engine run on talk, innumerable bees grumbling in their paper cells. Jack heard it everywhere he went. Gossip, opinionation, conjecture, speculation, debate.

LOVED this totally unexpected but also totally welcome sequel to Adamson‘s previous novel, The Outlander. Now I want to read that one again. Loved the sense of place and the return of the characters, and the thrilling story they were involved in.
#ReadCanada challenge: Alberta (set in Banff and Lake Louise and environs)

MsMelissa Excellent. I need to read Outlander. 4y
