Mehso-so

Monoceros is a bit obscure and considering that it centers around suicide, I had expected it to have more of an emotional tone than it did. I found it readable, but not particularly impactful or memorable. 2.5⭐️

This was my #BookSpin pick for March and my #Alberta book for #ReadCanada. I worked with the author at a literary festival, so my copy is signed and personalized to me, but I won‘t be holding onto it 🤷‍♀️

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 3y
MsMelissa Too bad it wasn‘t a winner for you. 3y
Reggie I loved this book. Everyone in this book failed each other spectacularly. 3y

candority @Reggie I saw your review! They definitely did. Especially Max and Walter 😭 3y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira I did not enjoy that one either. I had it as an audio book, but I did not connect with the narration or the characters. It was a DNF for me. 3y
candority @Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira At this point, I basically don‘t remember anything about this book. I‘m sorry you didn‘t enjoy it either! 3y

Here is my #BookSpinBingo board for March! My #BookSpin is the tagged book, while my #DoubleSpin is The World That We Knew. I‘ve been putting both of them off for some unknown reason, so I‘m glad I have this little push to make me read them! Here‘s to another great month of reading ahead! 💕📚

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! Looks great!! 3y
Librariana Your journal spread looks so lovely, too! 🥰 Best of luck with your spins 🍀🤞 and happy reading! 😁😊💜📚 3y
candority @Librariana Thank you! 💕 3y

#ReadCanada #Alberta
It is with regret that I decided to end this #AudioBook this morning. The story seems interesting, but I am unable to let myself be carried away by the narrator's jerky and borderline aggressive tone 🤷🏻‍♀️This is a though book; bullying, homophobia and suicide are at its core. I will try to read it in a paper format later on, in the hopes of using my own rhythm and intonation, in order to enjoy it.

LeahBergen I liked this one (but I read it). 4y
Reggie I liked this one, too. I just remember thinking that all these people failed each other. 4y
Lindy What a shame about the audiobook narrator. This book is great, and I even remember that the print edition I read was on lovely, linen-textured paper. There were reproductions of antique illustrations of unicorns at the start of each chapter. 3y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira @Lindy I will definitely, try the printed version when I find one to borrow. 3y
MsMelissa Too bad it didn‘t work for you, although maybe print would work better? 3y

Pickpick

Clearly with the suicide topic it is not going to be a happy book but it is a good book. I really liked the characters. I think people feel more real when they are flawed, have bad qualities as well as good. I like how the different characters process the suicide differently and I like how you can see the flaws in the school system in dealing with the suicide and with LGBTQ people. It does this without being preachy like an essay.

This nutso book starts off with the suicide of a bullied gay youth but has more to do with it's effects on the people whose viewpoints you read. The girl who bullied him, his secret lover, his parents, but then there's a drag queen, and the secret homosexual lovers, the counselor and the principal. What you thought was gonna be heartfelt was this story of how these humans all failed each other...and I hate to say this, it was entertaining. 👇🏼

Reggie Oh yeah, and there is a girl from his class, Farraday, who is obsessed with Unicorns, hence Monoceros, the Greek word for Unicorn. 7y
CouronneDhiver Wow! That's got a lot going on. Lol 7y
Reggie @CouronneDhiver It's a little crazy. Maybe a lot crazy. Especially the last chapter. Where there is still a question mark that's starting to fade away on my face. 7y

Lindy @Reggie Great review! It's a fun book in spite of the serious topic. Mayr wrote it because her partner, who was a teacher, quit teaching after a student at her school committed suicide. 7y
ReadingEnvy Still sounds intriguing! 7y
Reggie @Lindy Thanks, I read it cause you made it sound interesting on the podcast. I didn't know that. That's sad. 7y
Crystalblu Intriguing, I'll give it a try. 7y
Lindy @Reggie I'm so glad to know that you read it because of the Reading Envy podcast. 😊 7y

Her voice too shrill, the control seeping away, she coughs again, these students make her sick!
Mrs Mochinski crosses her arms over her copy of Romeo and Juliet. She wants to go home and pour herself a salad-bowl-sized glass of wine.

shawnmooney Now that's my idea of a salad! 🥂🥂 7y
Lindy @shawnmooney Grape salad, right? 7y

Until Faraday settles into her desk & the news about Patrick['s suicide] whacks her between the eyes, all she can think about is the tuft of evil frizz above her ear that day, what a toolshed her brother George is, hiding her straightening iron & not giving it back no matter how much she shrieks, & how she's finally going to buy that brocade bag after school & if someone else has already bought that perfect bag she will kill herself. She will.
