Fireball: Carole Lombard and the Mystery of Flight 3 | Robert Matzen
8 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
This fresh look at Hollywood's "Queen of Screwball," Carole Lombard, presents a first-ever examination of the events that led to the shocking flight mishap that took her life on the side of a Nevada mountain in 1942. It also provides a day-by-day account of the struggles of Lombard's husband, Clark Gable, and other family, friends, and fans to cope with the tragedy. In effect, having just completed the first sale of war bonds and stamps in the nation following its entry into World War II, Lombard became the first Hollywood start to sacrifice her life in the War. The War Department offered Gable a funeral service with full military honors, but he refused it, knowing that his wife would not approve of such spectacle. Based on extensive research rather than gossip, this investigation further explores the lives of the 21 others on the plane, including 15 members of the U.S. Army Air Corps, and addresses one of the most enduring mysteries of World War II. On a clear night full of stars, with TWA's most experienced pilot at the controls of a 10-month-old aircraft under the power of two fully functioning engines, why did the flight crash into that Nevada mountainside? This gripping page-turner presents the story of the people on the plane, the friends and families left behind, and the heroic first responders who struggled up a mountain hoping to perform a miracle rescue. It is a story of accomplishment, bravery, sacrifice, and loss.

Mehso-so

quite a story, which I didn't know much about. interesting (though in places almost too graphic). i didn't realize her mother was on the plane. Eddie Mannix, famous Hollywood fixer, also makes an appearance! where it lost me was the writing. a nonfiction account, but then sections that were clearly fiction, giving us for instance Clark Gable's thoughts. sad story. not really a mystery but definitely a tragedy.

Reviewsbylola I love Clark Gable so I will have to give this a shot. 8y

And this is Ember, our picky princess. She likes to hang out in the bathroom and often doesn't take treats or other offerings. Instead, she likes to tear around the apartment with her tail floofed and cuddle with her favorite fish toy. #catsoflitsy @lemonlime799

Set your DVR! It's Robert Montgomery (💗💗💗) day on Turner Classic Movies and late late tonight (2am EST) they're airing Mr. & Mrs. Smith, one of Carole Lombards final movies and one of her best. And it was the only true comedy Alfred Hitchcock ever made- and Carole played director for his requisite appearance in the film! 😊

Pickpick

Any book about Carole will be a pick for me, but I didn't feel super into this book all the time, although I think part of that was because I read almost half over the course of almost a week and a half just at night during my sons bedtime. So I didn't get fully immersed. But I still enjoyed it, and I appreciate that the author devoted some chapters to who the other plane crash victims were and brought them all back to life along with Carole.

So the book chapters go back and forth between the plane crash and the treacherous hike to look for survivors, and Carole Lombards biography. They are now getting closer and closer to intersecting, as I am up to the end of Carole's war bond tour and her deciding she wants to fly home instead of taking the train as planned. It is very stressful and so so sad. 😢

Just barely started this book and already giving me chills and making me tear up. I'd had no idea that the wreckage from the plane crash that had killed Carole Lombard and everyone else on board was still up in the mountains!

Carole Lombard will forever be one of my ultimate woman crushes. I saw this bio on Amazon for cheap on kindle, and initially the cover turned me off. But it got really good reviews and I haven't read an Old Hollywood bio in a while. Excited for this one! #wcw
