Daughters of Night | Laura Shepherd-Robinson

From the brothels and gin-shops of Covent Garden to the elegant townhouses of Mayfair, Laura Shepherd-Robinson's Daughters of Night follows Caroline Corsham, as she seeks justice for a murdered woman whom London society would rather forget . . . Lucias fingers found her own. She gazed at Caro as if from a distance. Her lips parted, her words a whisper: He knows. London, 1782. Desperate for her politician husband to return home from France, Caroline 'Caro' Corsham is already in a state of anxiety when she finds a well-dressed woman mortally wounded in the bowers of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. The Bow Street constables are swift to act, until they discover that the deceased woman was a highly-paid prostitute, at which point they cease to care entirely. But Caro has motives of her own for wanting to see justice done, and so sets out to solve the crime herself. Enlisting the help of thieftaker, Peregrine Child, their inquiry delves into the hidden corners of Georgian society, a world of artifice, deception and secret lives. But with many gentlemen refusing to speak about their dealings with the dead woman, and Caro's own reputation under threat, finding the killer will be harder, and more treacherous than she can know . . .

“Why do you seek to make enemies of everyone who matters in London?”
“You and your friends are not everyone, Lord March. And if I make enemies by hiring a man to look into a brutal murder, then I have to ask myself why that is.”

Where there is guilt, there is rage…even those at the top of the tree don‘t have impunity from murder, and their fall…is the furthest of all.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Such a brilliant book, set in London 1782, Caroline Corsham discovers a women's body, but once the police find out she was a prostitute they aren't interested at all. So Caroline hires Peregrine Child to find out who killed the woman. I love historical crime fiction and this was one of the best I have read in ages.

A totally unexpected, shocking and violent ending in the this book which is set in 1782 Georgian London. The final 120 pages had an excellent gripping storyline, it was a shame that the first 450 pages were so slow and drawn out. Don't expect any genteel conversation between the men and women in this story, it was all straight talking with bad language, murderous and sexual content none of which left much to one's imagination.

...carved with a relief of a cat, holding out a wooden paw. 'Puss,' Child called. Puss, are you there?"
A pause, then a shuffle behind the window . 'Mew' came the answer. 'Mew mew mew.'
The shutter remained closed, a necessary precaution given the gin laws. This way buyer couldn't inform on seller, and everyone went away happy, except the magistrates.

rubyslippersreads This looks like a very creepy version of a Maneki Neko, which are usually adorable Japanese lucky cats. 🙀 3y
charl08 @rubyslippersreads apparently this one was used to "secretly" serve Londoners gin... 3y
annamatopoetry The channel Tasting History on youtube has an episode called "The London Gin Craze and Beyond", which talks about tomcat gin, among other things. 3y

5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This book was so enjoyable that I couldn‘t put it down. The style of writing and everything about it reminds me of one of my favourite classical authors Wilkie Collins. I know that this book is set in the 1780‘s and Wilkie Collins books are set in his life time in the 1800‘s. There were so many twists and turns to this book I couldn‘t workout who the murderer was.
