When kids live in chaotic situations full of fighting, abuse, bullying, and other stressors, they find ways to survive. Joel found a way to survive by fighting. This book is an excellent read. Strong content warnings for racism, unstable family situations, domestic abuse, bullying, sexual abuse, gun violence, and a few other trauma warnings. #trauma #graphicNovel #Nonfiction

So far, this is an interesting read. Many content warnings for childhood trauma from violence, abandonment, racism, and sexual assault. This panel here stood out to me quite a lot. It's something my husband has observed happening in his own life as well.

Joel has done some fantastic graphic biographies of lesser known Black figures, but here he turns the lense on himself. A story worth hearing, bravely told, as some of it is deeply personal. He describes a challenging childhood and growing up with a reputation of being a fighter, despite not really having that mindset.

A disturbing look at how a little boy grows up with violence and poverty.

Tough graphic memoir about how the author grew up fighting so many things - situations, friends, bullies - and ended up ok. It covers a lot of terrible things that he lived through, but I didn‘t quite feel connected to him somehow-like I was still being kept an arms length away. #bookspinbingo #doublespin
