The Anatomy of Bibliomania
The Anatomy of Bibliomania | Holbrook Jackson
4 posts | 18 to read
Jackson inspects the allure of books, their curative and restorative properties, and the passion for them that leads to bibliomania ("a genial mania, less harmful than the sanity of the sane"). His commentary addresses why we read, where we read (on journeys, at mealtimes, on the toilet -- this has "a long but mostly unrecorded history"--In bed, and in prison), and what happens to us when we read. He touches on bindings, bookworms, libraries, and the sport of book hunting, as well as the behavior of borrowers, embezzlers, thieves, and collectors. Francis Bacon, Anatole France, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Leigh Hunt, Marcel Proust, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Shakespeare, and scores of other luminaries chime in on books and their love for them.

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView
📚 Are you a bibliophile or just a voracious reader? What do you think is the difference between the two?

Both. Bibliophile because I love books as objects, as art. Adding books to my library is one of my great pleasures. Voracious because I read a ton. No matter how many books I read a year, it will never feel like enough!

Pictured is one of my favorite books about books. Holbrook Jackson was a true bibliophile.

TheSpineView Thanks for playing and happy Tuesday! 🤩 2y

2. Whenever I‘m getting ready to follow them. Occasionally after that.
3. No quotes, but details of where “bibliophage” comes from.
4. Yes
5. I look at my Litfluence a few times each week. More if I‘m close to a milestone.

#TBRtemptation post 3! Jackson explores the allure of the book as a medium with curative and restorative properties. It's not only looking at why we read, but looking at where we read: journeys, mealtimes, the toilet, bed, prison, etc. Some consider this thick book selected essays in everything you can think of about books, such as the differences between bibliophiles & bibliomanes. A seminal treasure trove indeed. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
