Introducing Teddy
Introducing Teddy: A gentle story about gender and friendship | Jessica Walton
7 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
Errol and his teddy, Thomas, are best friends who do everything together. Whether it's riding a bike, playing in the tree house, having a tea party, or all of the above, every day holds something fun to do. One sunny day, Errol finds that Thomas is sad, even when they are playing in their favorite ways. Errol can't figure out why, until Thomas finally tells Errol what the teddy has been afraid to say: "In my heart, I've always known that I'm a girl teddy, not a boy teddy. I wish my name was Tilly, not Thomas.?? And Errol says, "I don't care if you're a girl teddy or a boy teddy! What matters is that you are my friend.?? Introducing Teddy introduces the youngest readers to understanding gender identity and transition in an accessible and heart-warming story about being true to yourself and being a good friend.

This sweet book wasn't in the Litsy database. The artwork is beautiful and it's a lovely story about a non-binary toy dinosaur that inspires a toy store to stop gender segregating toys. Such an affirming book with a great message! #queerbooks

This is Teddy, my favorite therapy dog and the 🌟 of Literacy Night at our school on Thursday. The kids were so excited to see him and to be able to sit down and read to him. 💜💜💜

My niece and I have read this affirming, adorable story over and over again. She says - "The teddy bear didn't feel safe telling people who she really is but when she did she was really happy and brave - just like me." Heart melt ??? So grateful for books like this in the world and so grateful to @JaimitaPR and @BookishMarginalia for drawing my attention to it! #queerbooks #transbooks

BookishMarginalia 💜💜💜 I'm glad she loved it! And she looks happy and full of life and joy. A hug! 8y
WanderingBookaneer You are welcome! So pleased that your niece enjoyed it. May she find the acceptance that Teddy did and may she continue to find other mirrors that reflect her life and feelings within the pages of other books. 8y

As I teacher I often think that we don't give kids enough credit. This is a perfect story to introduce young readers to gender identity as teddy's friends don't mind that she is now Tilly. Also, I love the story behind the book.

Lovely story about a transgender teddy bear being accepted by her friends for who she is inside. Would be a great way to introduce the concepts of gender and identity to children, and start important conversations about tolerance and acceptance.

Bibliogeekery Thanks for drawing my attention to this book! I haven't heard of it. My niece recently came out as trans and I like provide her with as many books and resources as possible. I just ordered this one thanks to you! 8y
WanderingBookaneer @Bibliogeekery : That is the best comment I've ever read online. 8y
