The Unrest-cure and Other Stories
The Unrest-cure and Other Stories | Edward Gorey, Saki
6 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
An NYRB Classics Original The whimsical, macabre tales of British writer H. H. Munro--better known as Saki--skewer the banality and hypocrisy of polite English society between the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of World War I. Saki's heroes are enfants terribles who marshal their considerable wit and imagination against the cruelty and fatuousness of a decorous and doomed world. Here, Saki's brilliantly polished dark gems are paired with illustrations by the peerless Edward Gorey, available for the first time in an English-language edition. The fragile elegance and creeping menace of Gorey's pen-and-ink drawings perfectly complements Saki's population of delicate ladies, mischief-making charges, spectral guests, sardonic house pets, flustered authority figures, and delightfully preposterous imposters.

I read this between Apr 30 & May 29 and gave it 4 ⭐️. I quite enjoyed it and will probably seek out more of Saki‘s work. I feel that Edward Gorey‘s illustrations suited the stories rather well.

Dry, darkly comedic short stories (usually 5-6 pages) that frequently feature children having fun at the expense of stuffy adults.
Cecil was trying to do his best Edward Gorey cat impression, but he kept getting upstaged by the kitten.

erzascarletbookgasm Ha! 😄🐱 look at that expression! 5y

Mostly Dead Things was supposed to arrive in the mail yesterday, but it didn‘t. So short stories it is. These are very dry pokes at the post-Victorian upper class. My favorite so far is about a husband who thinks his wife is obstinately avoiding conversation, but she‘s really just dead.

wanderinglynn I love Edward Gorey! I have a couple jigsaw puzzles of his pieces & 5y
LauraJ @wanderinglynn Me too! Bought this more for the illustrations than the stories. 5y
