#1 New York Times best-selling author Jo Nesb delivers an electrifying stand-alone novel about a dark family secret that tests the limits of brotherly love. In a rural village deep in the mountains, mechanic Roy leads a quiet, simple life, but when his little brother Carl, an entrepreneur, returns with a proposal for a grand hotel to revive the struggling town, dark secrets from their childhood threaten to resurface. As children, Roy defended his little brother against schoolyard bullies and vicious rumors, but his loyalty to family is tested when greed and betrayal saturate Carl's plans--not to mention when Roy's sister-in-law Shannon catches his eye. The farther he goes to protect Carl, the more Roy finds himself dredging up the town's shocking past. And when the town sheriff starts looking into Roy and Carl's parents' tragic deaths, Roy will have to reckon with how far he will go to protect his brother.

How far will Roy and Carl go to protect their dark family secrets? I loved this psychological thriller!

My first Jo Nesbo novel picked by Bear and I really really enjoyed it. An absolute monster of a book but such an amazing storyline and great characters. The relationships between the characters was great and I really ended up loathing Carl. I'll definitely try more by this author. Great read 📖👌🐻

Looking forward to giving this a go..... Although I kind of wish I'd checked the price before taking to the till 🙄🤨😳

Moonprismpower Yeah there‘s a spice shop near me and they never have sample sizes, like two cups worth. It‘s always bulk and pricey. I hope it‘s delicious. 3y

I had not read Jo before but I will. Like many current novels all the characters in this novel are flawed but I guess that is real life. On the other hand the family that is the subject of the story is very messed up. Overall the story kept my interest

Jo Nesbo is one of my favourite authors. I love his Harry Hole series. This book is different. I spent the first half of the book deeply disturbed at the direction it was heading. The book has everything including dysfunctional families, murder, coverups, and affairs. A real page turner that will keep you guessing the whole way through.

I'm done! Nesbo's writing is fantastic...but that ending? Well I guess I knew it would end that way, but still. 😛

For the record, whether writing a Harry Hole novel or a standalone, Nesbo‘s stories are dark and complex and always entertaining. So yeah, I‘m enjoying this one.

This is another really dark one. If you liked his book Macbeth, definitely read this.

Roy and Carl are still trying to cover up some mysterious deaths and disappearances from years ago. What would they be willing to do to keep their secrets?

This could be deadly. And it's not going to help my ratio.

ErikasMindfulShelf Awesome! Auto-approved is the best! I‘m so happy they have audio now. I think that will help my ratio. 🤞 4y
