Mark of the Thief
Mark of the Thief | Jennifer A. Nielsen
Jennifer A. Nielsen, author of the NYT and USA TODAY bestselling Ascendance Trilogy, has woven an electrifying tale of greed and power, magic and destiny, and one boy's courage at the heart of it all. When Nic, a slave in the mines outside of Rome, is forced to enter a sealed cavern containing the lost treasures of Julius Caesar, he finds much more than gold and gemstones: He discovers an ancient bulla, an amulet that belonged to the great Caesar and is filled with a magic once reserved for the Gods -- magic some Romans would kill for. Now, with the deadly power of the bulla pulsing through his veins, Nic is determined to become free. But instead, he finds himself at the center of a ruthless conspiracy to overthrow the emperor and spark the Praetor War, a battle to destroy Rome from within. Traitors and spies lurk at every turn, each more desperate than the next to use Nic's newfound powers for their own dark purposes. In a quest to stop the rebellion, save Rome, and secure his own freedom, Nic must harness the magic within himself and defeat the empire's most powerful and savage leaders.

I read this for #bookedintime #ancientrome @cuilin

This was great which comes as no surprise. Jennifer Nielsen is a solid gold middle grade writer! Very similar feel to The False Prince which I read recently- A kid with power unsure of who to trust among both adults and peers, but wanting to do the right thing. This would be a great intro to Ancient Rome for kids who also love fantasy!

Cuilin 🎉 Roman Civilization ✅ looks like a great read!! 1y

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 114

Mehso-so

I liked the Roman setting of the book, but the characters were all pretty flat, the dialogue clunky, and the plot full of clichés. The definition of mediocre.

"When she conforms to my standards of femininity I can see her as desirable" Just when I thought this romance couldn't get more cliché, it throws in this scene straight from a rom com

SeeStephWrite Ugggh. I read (ok, the first two books of) her False Prince trilogy and remember that being really fun, so that's extra disappointing. (Granted I read them awhile ago so I might not remember a bad romantic subplot) 8y

So how many chapters until they kiss? I don't think you could forecast a YA romance any more clearly than that.

SeeStephWrite He said never! His expectations clearly will not be subverted! He hates her. Hate hate hate 😆 8y
