This was great which comes as no surprise. Jennifer Nielsen is a solid gold middle grade writer! Very similar feel to The False Prince which I read recently- A kid with power unsure of who to trust among both adults and peers, but wanting to do the right thing. This would be a great intro to Ancient Rome for kids who also love fantasy!

Why I chose this book: The cover of the book caught my attention and the description at the back of the book is also interesting.
Brief summary: This book is about Nick who is a slave and was forced to go to mines in order to find the lost treasure of Julius Caesar.
so-soI liked the Roman setting of the book, but the characters were all pretty flat, the dialogue clunky, and the plot full of clichés. The definition of mediocre.
"When she conforms to my standards of femininity I can see her as desirable" Just when I thought this romance couldn't get more cliché, it throws in this scene straight from a rom com
So how many chapters until they kiss? I don't think you could forecast a YA romance any more clearly than that.
