My first 5 star read of 2022!

I am not sure what it is about Alex George, but I love the way he writes. When I started this, I was drawn in by every chapter and how he managed to convey so much in them. This book follows 4 characters over the course of a day, and by the end you feel like you know them all and are invested in all of their stories.

I knew early in that if something crazy didn't happen, it was a new fave book. It definitely was!

Brewychock48 Great story. I loved it 3y

This may be my favorite fiction I‘ve read this year. The lives of four post WWI Parisians intersect in the course of a single day. I audibly gasped when the story tied together at the end of the book and woke D and Hank both.😂 The author owns a book store near MIZZOU in Columbia, MO (Skylark). I‘ve been there a million times and had no idea the proprietor was an author, let alone one so talented. Recommend if you like historical fiction.

LeslieO I ❤️ this one, too. I didn‘t know the author owned a bookstore but I did know that he‘s on Litsy! 4y
Ericalambbrown @LeslieO His shop is wonderful! I had no idea until I read the jacket cover about the author after I finished the book. 🤣 4y

@Lesanne @Kaylamburson @sprainedbrain @suvata #LMPBC I wouldn‘t have picked this up to read on my own, but I very much enjoyed the short chapters, interesting characters, and intertwined storylines. Good choice! 3/5 🇫🇷‘s I should be able to get this in the mail by Wednesday.

Kaylamburson I'm a bit behind, but I finished The Mothers and I'll get it in the mail by Monday. So sorry for the delay! @Wife 4y

This is a gorgeous and gritty book set in Paris in the 1920s and follows a group of individuals trying to deal with their present and come to terms with their past ❤

Without intention, I‘m a heat seeking missile for books where those Post WWI expats took up residence in Paris to live their creative lives. If only they knew the inspiration they‘d provide as background for other writer‘s over the next 100 years! I wish I‘d kept track of how many books I‘ve read in the last 5 years where Earnest Hemingway graced the pages!

LeslieO My favorite kind of book! And I loved this one. 4y
marleed @LeslieO I laugh at how often I obviously chose a book based on its title or cover, because I really don‘t search out books where Earnest Hemingway and Co are props, but it is so funny to me how often it happens! 4y

I finished this short novel in a day, motored by the eloquent prose and depth of each character. Storylines intersect in unexpected ways, revealing truth bombs and a whole lot of heartbreak. Highly recommend for fans of literary and character-driven novels. There isn't a lot of plot and the ending is wide open-ended, but George manages to make you as the reader care, even without the pull of action, to know what happens to each and every person.

Kaylamburson @Wife , this is on its way to you!!! Should arrive Monday 8/31. Want me to email the tracking? 4y
Wife Yay. If it doesn‘t show by 9/1, I‘ll ask for tracking. Thank You 🌹 4y

Historical fiction set in Paris. The stories started out independent but all ended up at the same place and time interconnecting.

This is the best book I have read in recent months. I was completely absorbed in the tales of four Paris inhabitants over 24 hours in the city. I could have read hundreds of pages more, the authors writing so so beautiful. I cared for all of these characters and will still think of them in the weeks to come. The addition of the occasional scene with Hemingway or Josephine Baker added to the beauty of Paris in the 1920s. #highlyrecommend #mustread

tpixie Oh, good! I‘ve been wanting to read this! 1st have to catch up on Bookclub books 📚 4y

Lovely writing... It‘s Paris in the 20s.... A down-on-his-luck painter, a maid to a famous writer, an immigrant puppeteer and a journalist with wanderlust, all with stories of love and loss, entwine in the timeline of a single day, whilst the cast of peripheral characters reads like a who‘s who of the creative people of the time.... Hemingway, Josephine Baker, Proust et al... Beautifully descriptive and rooted in a period I love to read about. 💕

This book follows 4 characters: Souren, Guillaume, Jean-Paul, and Camille, in 1927 Paris. The chapters rotate between characters, but also dip back into their pasts from 1913-1919. I love how near they are to the famous figures in Paris at this time such as Ravel, Gertrude Stein, and Josephine Baker without focusing on them and how their stories almost touch each other like 6 degrees of separation. Good book, but I was dissatisfied with the ending.

Palimpsest Funny how the quote on the front cover from another author is “The ending will leave you breathless”. Well, it didn‘t. I love this time frame in Paris and while overall it‘s a pick, it was more depressing than I was hoping for. It‘s not the fault of the book, I just really wanted something fun and uplifting. Also, two of the characters storylines were similar and I kept having to remind myself who was who. Maybe I‘m just absent minded? (edited) 4y
