Prepping for dinner tonight - Somali stew. The Xawaash spice mix is essential to Somali cuisine, though compared to Ethiopian Berbere ♥️ it has little heat. I‘ll be adjusting to our taste.😋

I absolutely loved flipping through this cookbook that covered several African countries. The photography was lovely and the stories of the women featured were life giving. All of the food looked great but I am most excited to try Rum with Berry Soda from Mozambique, Shaah Cadays (chai) from Somalia, and Chakalaka & Cheddar Braaibroodjies (grilled cheese) from S Africa. #LMPBC will mail this week!
A vibrant, lovely book about culture, food, and family. It features a selection of fulfilled women sharing what is special to them and how they describe their place in the world.
I saved quite a few recipes to try - they are all very approachable!

If you use a magnifying glass, you can see my 2022 reads 🤣
Reading adjacent goal is to finish up my library and spend more time in it reading.
Another great #FoodandLit meal, this time for #Kenya. Kachumbari (tomato and onion salad), Mukimo with Onions and Greens, Carrot drink, and Basboosa (semolina cake).
Somali pasta - it‘s what‘s for dinner tonight! 😋 This is a terrific East African cookbook including interviews with grandmothers about their cultures and food.
@TiminCalifornia So thanks for the lovely books you sent! I'm so excited to start reading and cook inspired in the gastronomy books you'd included. Sounds amazing!

Thanks @Chelleo
Such a cool cookbook. It introduced the grandmas who gave the recipes and interviewed them. It also gave background on the countries they came from.
I read this charming cookbook more like a travel guide or geography book. Interviews with and recipes from several grandmother's from 8 different East African nations that border the indian ocean.
Serendipity! I have the right books in my hands at the right moment.
What an amazing work - not just a cookbook but a cultural food anthology of sorts. The introduction is an absorbing narrative and the interviews with the bibis (grandmothers) are delightful. Each bibi picked her own recipes to share and exemplify accessible home cooking. In fact they specifically selected dishes that are easy to prepare. Beautiful photos too of course.
It's been awhile since I was excited about a cookbook, but I can't wait to get into this one.
