A new fantasy-adventure series from the co-creator of the hit animated shows Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra! In twelve-year-old Giacomo's Renaissance-inspired world, art is powerful, dangerous, and outlawed. A few artists possess Geniuses, birdlike creatures that are the living embodiment of an artist's creative spirit. Those caught with one face a punishment akin to death, so when Giacomo discovers he has a Genius, he knows he's in serious trouble. Luckily, he finds safety in a secret studio where young artists and their Geniuses train in sacred geometry to channel their creative energies as weapons. But when a murderous artist goes after the three Sacred Tools--objects that would allow him to destroy the world and everyone in his path—Giacomo and his friends must risk their lives to stop him. “DiMartino masterfully weaves a thrilling action-adventure epic into an imaginative and terrifying world.” —Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra “Rebel Genius is a natural extension of Michael Dante DiMartino's work on Avatar: The Last Airbender: charming young heroes, magical creatures, an innovative magic system, and mysteries galore. Did I read this just because it was written by one of the creators of Avatar? Yes, I did. But it was an incredibly unique and interesting story with beautiful illustrations! I can‘t wait to start the second book!

I‘ll start by saying that Avatar: The Last Airbender is my favorite thing ever. Literally my number one fandom. So of course I was excited that one of the co-creators of the show wrote a book! Rebel Genius was a lot of fun. The beginning was a little slow for me, but once the story picked up I finished the book in no time. I‘ll definitely keep an eye out for the sequel! 🔴

It breaks my heart to give this book anything less than a stellar review. As an avid fan of Avatar: the Last Airbender, I wanted this book to be amazing, but unfortunately DiMartino hasn't figured out that less is often more.

By no means is this a bad book. What it is is a debut effort. I will continue to read this series when Warrior Genius comes out and I look forward to watching Mike's writing ability improve.

A good first debut by Michael Dante DiMartino. I'd recommend for younger readers just getting into the genre of "kid gets powers and goes on epic adventure with rag tag group of friends."

What if Art was magic? Using the principles of sacred geometry and giving the world another hero with more heart than brawn, DiMartino has created another fun and masterful world in this wonderful story for middle grade readers. Fans of Avatar the Last Airbender will not be surprised by the level of craft exhibited in DiMartino's first novel. Explore a world like Renaissance Italy with Giacomo, his Genius Spirit and a cast of talented companions

Holy moly this book was so cool! Art is literally magic and so forbidden. Artists have a companion "genius" (bird-like creature) that inspires them and funnels artistic energy into physical power. A young group of artists must find the Creator's lost tools before they're used to destroy the empire.

Perfect for fans of Harry Potter (magical kid gang against the world) and DiMartino's other work, Avatar: the Lost Airbender (same reason)

Happy #TBRTuesday! This is my boatload of books to read (plus my current read) at the beach. I'm excited to read them all, but I'll be lucky to get through half of them in my four days off work 😂
