Remembrance of Things Past
Remembrance of Things Past | Marcel Proust
12 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
Marcel Proust (1871-1922) spent the last fourteen years of his life writing A la recherche du temps perdu. It is an intimate epic, an excavation of the self, and a comedy of manners by turns and all at once. Proust is the twentieth century's Dante, presenting us with a unique, unsettling picture of ourselves as jealous lovers and unmitigated snobs, frittering our lives away, with only the hope of art as a possible salvation. He offers us a form of redemption for a sober and secular age.Scott Moncrieff's delightful translation was for many years the only access to Proust in English. A labour of love that took him nearly as many years as Proust spent writing the original. Moncrieff's translation strives to capture the extraordinary blend of muscular analysis with poetic reverie that typifies Proust's style. It remains a justly famous classic of translation.Originally published in seven parts, Wordsworth Editions are unique in offering the complete work in two volumes. Please note, this book is in Crown Quarto format, and therefore has a higher price than the rest of the World Literature series at 6.99

Picked up some gorgeous editions of Proust‘s trilogy while visiting family for the holidays 🍂 also found an encyclopedia of herbs— anyone else read the encyclopedia as a kid?

🕯️🍂This centerpiece combines rosemary & marigolds, memorializing absent friends 🪦🍁 so it‘s a fitting representation of both finds!

Texreader Yes I loved reading the encyclopedias as a kid! And I‘d enjoy this too! 12mo

So .... known as a classic & beloved around the world ... not sure why.... what I DO know is that there is gorgeous prose where you also enjoy the story. (Astonishing.) There is gorgeous prose that has benefitted from an editor .... oh, not this book. No editor in sight; at best, asleep at the wheel. I did enjoy the parts where Swann appeared but anxiety over a good night kiss from Mom = snore. I continue but Swann, Swann where art thou?

BarbaraBB There‘ll be a lot of Swann! 4y
CindiB Thank you @BarbaraBB - that makes me feel so much better! 4y

The last time I ordered from #BetterWorldBooks half my order never arrived. They refunded my money quite nicely, so I decided to give them another try. I ordered the complete set of Proust‘s Remembrance of Things Past / In Search of Lost Time because I didn‘t trust that I could get through it in French. This is what arrived. All the volumes (the bottom book is 5, 6 & 7) except 1. Instead I got Smoking Typewriters ?!?! I‘ve written them 👇🏻

Lcsmcat 👆🏻 and I‘m sure they‘ll once again be cheerful and make it right, but it‘s so frustrating! 5y
Aimeesue Of course it's the FIRST volume! 😂 5y
Lcsmcat @Aimeesue I know! That made it just that much more frustrating! 5y

TheAromaofBooks I mostly deal with them via ebay, and have had mixed results. Usually if I order just an individual book it's okay, but every time I've tried to order an entire series of books, something goes wrong. Last time I ordered a set of six books and got one! As you said, customer service is good - they refunded me in full - but... I kind of wanted the books!? 5y
Lcsmcat @TheAromaofBooks I love their concept, and until the last two orders never had a problem. But I may use ThriftBooks from now on for big orders. 5y
Tamra That is too bad! 😢 I‘ve never had an issue with BWB. I wonder if something has changed (for the worse) in the organization? That is disappointing. 5y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘ve recently ordered some books from them, keeping my fingers and toes crossed my orders will arrive correctly, eventually. I do have to wait around 6 weeks for them to travel across the 🌏 . 😏 5y
Lcsmcat @erzascarletbookgasm 🤞🏻 that they get your order right. 5y
Lcsmcat @Tamra @erzascarletbookgasm @TheAromaofBooks @Aimeesue UPDATE BetterWorld Books refunded my money, as expected, and told me to keep the book or pass it on. I‘ve found it a home in a local charter high school where a friend teaches English. 5y
Tamra @Lcsmcat 👍🏾 5y
erzascarletbookgasm That‘s great 🙂👍 5y
TheAromaofBooks Happy ending!! 5y

“‘When from a long-distant past nothing subsists, after the people are dead, after the things are broken and scattered, taste and #smell alone, more fragile but more enduring, more immaterial, more persistent, more faithful, remain poised a long time, like souls.”

"I raised to my lips a spoonful of tea in which I had soaked a morsel of cake. No sooner had the warm liquid, and the crumbs with it, touched my palate, a shudder ran through my body, and I stopped, intent upon the extraordinary changes that were taking place. An exquisite pleasure had invaded my senses, but individual, detached, with no suggestion of it's origins."

Booksnchill I have read Swann‘s Way now twice and the rest of this series is on my 2018 classics read list! Will be making madeleines!! 7y
merelybookish @Cathythoughts Thank you! @erzascarletbookgasm Me too! Do they launch you into reveries of your childhood? ☺️ 7y
merelybookish @Booksnchill That is impressive! Both the reading and the baking. I tried to read it when I was in my 20s. Not sure how far I got but eventually gave up. But I'd like to try again sometime. 7y
Booksnchill @merelybookish I found Swann‘s Way accessible but you see I haven‘t gotten past it! I think it is a product of getting older that these types of volumes now appeal- like Knausgaard‘s My Struggles as well! 7y
BarbaraBB Way too late with my comment but this is of course the ultimate #cookie in literature! 7y
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Yes, I was rather pleased with myself when I thought of it. Cookie isn't the easiest word to find a quote for. ☺️ 7y

Day 1 of @bookriot month-long photo thing.
Have posted my dedicated bookshelves enough in the past, so here's my more free-form shelves. One on the right was gonna be solely Criterion editions, but I needed the room for other stuff; left shelf is C.D.s, board & video games and additional DVDs and books.

The bathroom door in my hotel room has a picture of Proust on the outside and a quote from Remembrance of Things Past on the inside.

"We would like the truth to be revealed to us by novel signs, not by a sentence similar to those which we have constantly repeated to ourselves. The habit of thinking prevents us at times from experiencing reality, immunizes us against it, makes it seem no more than another thought." This seems even more true today than in Proust's time when we become so saturated with media showers. Photo of Proust's Ms.

"Days in the past cover up little by little those that preceded them and are themselves buried beneath those that follow them. But each past day has remained deposited in us, as in a vast library where, even of the oldest books, there is a copy which doubtless nobody will ever ask to see."
