The Trials of Koli
The Trials of Koli: The Rampart Trilogy, Book 2 | M. R. Carey
11 posts | 11 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
'Carey writes with compassion and fire - strange and surprising and humane' Lauren Beukes THE EARTH WANTS TO SWALLOW US WHOLE . . . Koli never planned to set foot outside his small village. He knew that beyond its walls lay a fearsome landscape filled with choker trees, vicious beasts and Shunned men. But when he was exiled, he had no choice but to journey out into this strange world where every moment is a fight for survival. And it's not just Koli's life that is threatened. Whole villages just like his are dying out. But Koli heard a story, once. A story about lost London, and the mysterious tech of the Old Times that may still be there. If he can find it, there may still be a way for him to change his own fate - by saving the lives of those who are left. Following The Book of Koli comes The Trials of Koli - the second novel in M. R. Carey's breathtakingly original Rampart trilogy, set in a strange and deadly world of our own making. Praise for the Rampart trilogy: 'This is a BEAUTIFUL book. Gripping, engaging, and absolutely worth the time it takes to burrow yourself into its reality. I can't recommend it highly enough' Seanan McGuire 'Narrator Koli's inquisitive mind and kind heart make him the perfect guide to Carey's immersive, impeccably rendered world' Kirkus 'An ingenious, dizzily provocative novel . . . Carey invents a fantastic far-future world, finding humanity in unlikely places' Helen Marshall, World Fantasy Award-winning author Look out for the final novel in the Rampart trilogy: The Fall of Koli

#BookReport
I've had somewhat of a slow reading week finishing only one book. I started both Trials of Koli and Childhood's End and gotten about a quarter of the way through them but never really sat down and read straight through like I usually do when I'm in the reading zone. A large part of my week has been spent knitting a shrug that I'm really excited about.

Book 2 of the Rampart Trilogy. Can‘t wait for Book 3! Book 2 is told through both Koli‘s and Spinner‘s POV. We see what Mythen Rood had to deal with after Koli was cast out in Book 1 while also following Koli, Cup, Urusula, and Monono‘s adventures to find the signal. I love character driven stories but sometimes they can get slow. Carey does a great job of writing a heart pumping character driven adventure story.

This sequel to The Book of Koli amps up the action & really gives the trilogy some solid movement. In this installment it moves from an okay dystopian to one that really grows some legs & has some clout. The dual POV was an excellent choice & adds a lot of complexity, depth, and interest to the story. The movement in this novel is much faster paced & much more engaging. I'm excited to see how things round out in the third book.

This is book 2 of the Rampart Trilogy by M.R. Carey, writer of The Girl with All the Gifts. The setting is the world many, many years after the Unfinished War. Society has devolved into a type of medieval existence except that there is leftover “tech“ from before the final war and climate change. Its all very creative and imaginative. I will definitely read the third book. 4 ⭐ s

I was so excited to be approved for book 2 of The Ramparts Trilogy as soon as I requested it on NetGalley. Koli is as charming as ever & it was fun to have a 2nd narrator as well, even if she is a little more self-serving than our sweet Koli-boo. We learn so much about Ingland in this book & I can't wait for the last one! Check out my review here:

The Rampart Trilogy is shaping up to be a fantastic series of dystopian fantasy. The second in the trilogy, “The Trials of Koli” was a really enjoyable read, exploring an already well-established world in even more detail. This was a strong 4 stars for me!

What a thrilling sequel!! The second book in this dystopian trilogy continues both in world-building in this brutal landscape of bloodthirsty trees and dwindling population as well as the characters and their relationships. Exciting and original, I appreciated the additional perspective added here which helped refresh my memory of the first book while deepening the plot. I hope the wait isn‘t long for the concluding volume!
