Georgie goes to Cornwall with her best friend Belinda to inspect a spooky house Belinda has inherited. While there, the house proves untenable so the pair are invited to stay with Rose, a woman Belinda knew as a child. Rose is now married to Belinda's childhood crush, Tony. When Rose confides that she thinks Tony might have killed his first wife, Georgie and Belinda investigate. But when Tony turns up dead during a thunderstorm, all fingers point to a creepy housekeeper who is harbouring a dark secret.

Series: Her Royal Spyness #14

Fun, imaginative homage to [Rebecca]. Mrs. Mannering, indeed....

This is Royal Spyness (and Rhys Bowen) doing Daphne du Maurier and Rebecca. Cornish setting, creepy house, dead first wife - and a murder. I loved this. And with a new Rebecca adaptation out on Netflix (although it‘ll have a hard job to get close to the Charles Dance/Emilia Fox version) it was a great time to read this.

I appreciate the Author's note at beginning about how the evils of men where treated in that time vs now.

As for the story; Loved this homage to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca and it's setting of Cornwall. It had me guessing to the very end.

Characters have grown and changed since I first met them. Which is reflected on in this story. It keeps the series fresh.

Crinoline_Laphroaig I love the Anna Massey Audible of Rebecca. It's classic English novel being read to you by beautiful English voice. Descriptions of tea and flowers is worth Audible credit. 4y

I quite enjoyed this latest installment of the Her Royal Spyness series. This one pays homage to Daphne du Maurier‘s Rebecca and does it well imo. I cannot recommend this series enough! And I have a sudden hankering to watch Rebecca now. 4⭐️

The Royal Spyness series is a cozy mystery set in England in the 1930s. Georgie, cousin to the King, is a poor relation and throughout the books finds herself embroiled in numerous murder cases. Whilst helping to solve all of them, she manages to collect a cadre of quirky friends as well as handsome husband.

This particular book turns a weekend getaway into a manor house mystery on the atmospheric Cornwall coast. A great addition to the series!
