The Idea of Perfection
The Idea of Perfection | Kate Grenville
9 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Harley Savage is a plain woman, a part-time museum curator and quilting expert with three failed marriages and a heart condition. Douglas Cheeseman is a shy, gawky engineer with jug-handle ears, one marriage gone sour, and a crippling lack of physical courage. They meet in the little Australian town of Karakarook, where Harley has arrived to help the town build a heritage museum and Douglas to demolish the quaint old Bent Bridge. From the beginning they are on a collision course until the unexpected sets them both free. Elegantly and compassionately told, The Idea of Perfection is reminiscent of the work of Carol Shields and Annie Proulx and reveals Kate Grenville as "a writer of extraordinary talent" (The New York Times Book Review).

Found in a little free library . The best descriptions of the Aussie country side. Right at the beginning she describes a country pub. I was taken right back to my memories of the many country pubs I have visited long ago. However her long beautiful descriptions at times got a bit too much for me. I wanted the story to move faster. I think in her later books she got the balance right. A great Aussie writer.

#12booksof2021 #February @Andrew65
A great idea as it's interesting to look back at a month's reading and reflect on what books stood out. In Feb highlights included 'left hand of darkness' and 'shadowplay' but I'm going to go with a very gentle love story set in a remote Australian town where 2 curious misfits seem destined not to find each other.
From recollection this was a v heartwarming tale at a point in 2021 when everything seemed v bleak

Andrew65 This is an author I want to read. 2y

Loved this story of two misfits Harley and Douglas who visit a small Bush Town, H to create a heritage museum, D to dismantle a bridge despite community protest. Both older with mixed experience of past love their paths cross & this makes for a gentle and compelling tale told with love of character, wordplay, and the community as well as a great sense of place.

#MarchBookstagram2018 Day 9, Haven‘t Read Yet.
I tried to put all my TBR in one post but haha, it won‘t ever fit these small IG squares! 😂

The Idea of Perfection by Kate Grenville was a gift from @ruthame07 and I‘ve been meaning to get on with this but my favorite authors kept releasing new books so...

Today and yesterday was such busy days but yay for the weekend!!! Any fun plans/events you‘re looking forward to? :)

What book has been languishing unread on your shelves the longest? I've had this sitting untouched for years and I've no idea why!

TheLudicReader I bet Jayne Anne Phillips' novel Shelter has been on my tbr shelf for 20 years. I should get on that, eh? 8y
