The Book of Hidden Wonders
The Book of Hidden Wonders: A Novel | Polly Crosby
8 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
A charming, deeply imaginative debut novel about a young girl who is immortalized in her fathers illustrated books containing clues to their family secrets. Romilly Kemp and her eccentric painter father have happy but sheltered lives in a ramshackle mansion in the English countryside. When her father finds fame with a series of childrens books starring Romilly as the main character, everything changes: exotic foods appear on the table, her father appears on TV and strangers appear at their door, convinced the books will lead them to a precious prize. But as time passes, Romillys father becomes increasingly suspicious of the outside world until, before her eyes, he begins to disappear within himself. She returns to his illustrations, looking for a way to connect with her ailing father, and finds a series of clues hes left just for her. This treasure hunt doesnt lead her to gold or jewels, but something worth far morea shocking secret that is crucial to understanding her family. Written with tremendous heart and charisma, The Book of Hidden Wonders is an unforgettable story about growing up, facing mortality and discovering the hidden wonders that make us who we are.

Totally not what I thought I was getting into from what I read on the back of the book. The author did paint a picture but it was a depressing one. Plus it was another book that left many questions I had unanswered. Maybe if I knew it was a sad book I could appreciate it more but I was caught off guard and that ruined it for me. Proceed with caution if you pick this as your next read.

Similar in theme of The Discomfort of Evening with none of the gut punch writing. I found it predictable and bland.

Freespirit Move on to the next great book...😊 3y

Half done and this book is not the one I wanted to read: the cover and blurb promised whimsy and treasure. I want to know what happens so I‘ll keep going....

This book was definitely quite different. I really liked it, it was a bit crude in some parts though. I liked the little mystery, but I also just could listen to this writing all day. It was really really beautifully written. I was expecting the ending, but it didn't matter, the book was sooo good. I do want to add this book was a dark and heavy read.

I don‘t know what to think. I‘m not sure I actually “ got” this story. Think I need someone else to read it so I can talk about it. It was a very strange read for me. The “ love of my life” read a review and got the book for herself. She gave up on it and passed it to me as usually what she doesn‘t Iike I do! 😊.

This was an interesting story and it‘s a little hard to review. The subject matter was both whimsical and really dark. There‘s some really difficult subject matter here surrounding mental illness, disability, neglect and abuse. The premise of a father writing his daughter into a series of books was intriguing and even though I figured out the plot twist, I enjoyed it overall.
