The Islands at the End of the World
The Islands at the End of the World | Austin Aslan
4 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
In this fast-paced survival story set in Hawaii, electronics fail worldwide, the islands become completely isolated, and a strange starscape fills the sky. Leilani and her father embark on a nightmare odyssey from Oahu to their home on the Big Island. Leilanis epilepsy holds a clue to the disaster, if only they can survive as the islands revert to earlier ways. A powerful story enriched by fascinating elements of Hawaiian ecology, culture, and warfare, this captivating and dramatic debut from Austin Aslan is the first of two novels. The author has a masters degree in tropical conservation biology from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Praise for Islands at the End of the World: A riveting tale of belonging, family, overcoming perceived limitations, and finding a home.--School Library Journal, Starred "Aslans debut honors Hawaiis unique cultural strengths--family ties and love of home, amplified by geography and history--while remaining true to a genre that affirms the mysterious grandeur of the universe waiting to be discovered."--Kirkus Reviews, Starred "Aslans debut is a riveting tale of belonging, family, overcoming perceived limitations, and finding a home."--School Library Journal, Starred From the Hardcover edition.

Thanks for the tag @Ast_Arslan

1. I read a lot of really good books this month: The Final Girls Support Group, The Princess Bride, The Bone Collector, Mary Ann in Autumn. and The Islands at the End of the World.

2. No, it's enough just trying to work through my tbr.

“Wanna” and “howzit” and “ur” — I can‘t do it. Also the MC saying she will only believe she‘s pretty if she gets a boyfriend in chapter one? This isn‘t for me.

I really wanted to like this because it has a natural disaster and is set in Hawaii, but I am not connecting with this MC.

TheAromaofBooks I'm not a fan of books that have so much slang that it detracts from the narrative. 4y

Mehso-so

Even for a dystopian that takes place on the Hawaiian islands this book took a weird turn. Very strange. It was very fast paced and I got through it all in a few hours. I will not continue the series, just a little too underwhelming for me.
