Perestroika in Paris
Perestroika in Paris: A Novel | Jane Smiley
13 posts | 13 read | 16 to read
"From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres and the New York Times best-selling Last Hundred Years Trilogy, a captivating, brilliantly imaginative story of three extraordinary animals--and a young boy--whose lives intersect in Paris Paras is a spirited racehorse at a racetrack west of Paris. At dusk, one afternoon she pushes open the door of her stall--she's a curious filly--and, after traveling through the night, arrives by chance in the City of Light. She's dazzled, and often mystified, by the sights, sounds and smells around her, but she isn't afraid. Soon she meets an elegant dog, a German shorthair pointer named Frida, who knows how to get by without attracting the attention of suspicious Parisians. Paras and Frida coexist for a time in the city's lush green spaces, nourished by Frida's strategic trips to the bakery and the butchershop. They keep company with two irrepressible ducks, and an opinionated raven. But then Paras meets a human boy, Etienne, and discovers a new, otherworldly part of Paris: the secluded, ivy-walled house where the boy and his nearly-one-hundred-year-old great grandmother live, quietly and unto themselves. As the cold weather and Christmas near, the unlikeliest of friendships bloom among humans and animals alike. But how long can a runaway horse live undiscovered in Paris? And how long can a boy keep her hidden, and all his own? Jane Smiley's beguiling new novel is itself an adventure that celebrates curiosity and ingenuity, and expresses the desire of all creatures for true friendship, love, and freedom"--

This was just what I needed after Clarissa! Light, hope-filled, and fun. With Smiley‘s deft prose to boot. It was also my April #doublespin and I finally got around to it. 😂

Y‘all this book was so sweet and fun I can‘t even. It‘s told from the POV of a horse. Yes, you read that correctly. And then there is Frieda the German shorthair pointer, a couple of ducks, a raven and a young boy. This was a one sitting read for me. Light, fun, and endearing really. All set in the beautiful city of Paris France 🇫🇷

Thank you @AmyG for the #lcs package! I‘m on a huge Paris kick right now, so this is the perfect choice. I‘m taking myself on a solo reading retreat this weekend, so the goodies will be perfect companions for that. Thank you for hosting, @bookish_wookish ❤️

AmyG Enjoy your trip! 2y

A lovely and sweet little story about a racehorse that gets loose in Paris and befriends a dog, raven, boy, and a few other characters. It‘s a gentle read that was a little on the dull side for me. Just not my thing, I guess. Looking forward to what the rest of the book group thinks!

My mom gave this to me for Christmas and I didn‘t read the synopsis before I started it, so I had no clue what it was about. It was one of the most quirky, random books I have ever read, but also utterly delightful. I loved every second of it!

CarolynM I'm intrigued. Stacked 🙂 3y
violabrain @CarolynM I hope you enjoy it! The story is really sweet and I loved how clearly each individual character was drawn, especially the animals! 3y

Did I buy this book solely based upon one of the characters being a GSP? Yes I did, I have a GSP her name is Ginny. 🐶 *see Alastor in the background not laying in the dog bed 😹

A slow, sweet, feel-good book. Seemed perfect for a pandemic read. But, for me it was a little too slow. #ARC #Edelweiss

Cathythoughts Some of her books I loved. Some I totally bailed... unusual author... new book ?! Interesting 4y
